In recent years, the NBA’s schedule has been a topic of conversation. While it’s current format has been around for years, the NBA is looking to make some changes. But it won’t happen anytime soon. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the league no longer plans to have owners vote in April regarding the situation.
Since the 1967-68 season, the NBA has played a season of 82 games. The league pondered changes, as Shams Charania reported the NBA wanted to shorten the season to 78 games. There were also reports that the league wanted to implement an in-season tournament, which would include all 30 teams. Both of these proposals were set to be voted on, but that plan has been pushed back.
As of now, there is no consensus on when the tournament should be held, but there have been talks of it starting around Christmas and going into mid-January.
In order for these initiatives to pass, the league would need two-thirds majority approval from its teams. If this happens, the changes could be implemented by the 2021-22 season. This goal is still in place, even without the vote in April.
The NBA could be gearing up for some big changes. Commissioner Adam Silver considered the tournament after wanting something similar to European soccer. Then, the season could be shortened by four games.
If the changes do occur, NBA fans may have something to look forward to it. And, it could happen before as soon as 2021-22. Despite the vote being pushed back, it is safe to say that changes are on the horizon.
