This season, Cam Newton was recovering from a shoulder injury and also working through a foot injury. He was lost for the season and there were talks about going with a different quarterback for the 2020 season. Here are the five potential landing spots for Cam Newton. (odds by sportsbettingdime.com)
1. Carolina Panthers +375
Carolina isn’t the odds-on-favorite to land Newton, but he very well may end up back with the team. Kyle Allen started off playing well for the team before struggling down the stretch. Their rookie quarterback, Will Grier, didn’t do so well either. The Panthers need to get the best quarterback available.
The Panthers will have a new coach next season and they could prefer Newton as the quarterback. While Newton hasn’t been able to stay healthy, he is better than any other alternative. The new coach will want to work with him because he is better than the unknown.
2. Chicago Bears +250
If the Panthers decide to move on from Newton, his most likely destination will be Chicago. The Bears have said they are sticking with Mitchell Trubisky, but things could change quickly if there is a way to improve at the position. With a good defense, all the Bears need is a decent offense to contend for a title.
Chicago may be hesitant to trade for Newton, as they are without a first-round pick this year. They’d have to go all in, which may not be the worst scenario because of the roster they have built. While they would love for him to be on the roster, they may wait to see if the Panthers cut him to make it easier to acquire him.
3. Miami Dolphins +500
The Dolphins have traded away a lot of the talent on their roster for draft picks. They started Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback this season and may want to bring in more of a long term option. With the fifth pick in the draft, they may not like the quarterbacks available, so they may make a move to acquire Newton.
Because the Dolphins aren’t ready to compete, Newton would have to love the city and embrace the rebuild. With so many picks in the draft, the Dolphins could afford to trade for Newton. If the Panthers don’t bring him back, Newton may have only a few options and the Dolphins would love to have his talents if they don’t get a quarterback of the future.
4. Los Angeles Chargers +900
Philip Rivers has taken a step backward and he doesn’t know his status for the future with the franchise. The Chargers have a roster ready to compete, but injuries and bad luck have gotten in the way. If they lose Rivers, they may want to look at acquiring Newton.
Newton would be a risk for the Chargers with his injury history, but if they decide they want to move on from Rivers, but still compete, he may be their best option. They could also go with a rookie quarterback, but some of the veterans may want to go after a Super Bowl and getting a rookie could hinder their goals.
5. New England Patriots +1000
Tom Brady was just bounced from the playoffs. His return to New England is up in the air, as he is a free agent. He could always retire as well. The backup quarterback for the Patriots is Jarrett Stidham, who is not ready to lead the team to another Super Bowl.
Bill Bellichick would have to change some of his offensive strategies in order to get the most out of Newton. If any coach would be able to do that, it would be Bellichick. The Patriots would have to find another talented quarterback as fast as possible if Brady decided to not come back to the team.
