Will Wade Suspended Amidst Wiretap Evidence

LSU has indefinitely suspended second-year head coach Will Wade, the school announced in a statement earlier today. The suspension comes on the tails of wiretap evidence released yesterday detailing a conversation Wade had with middleman Christian Dawkins regarding a player’s recruitment. Wade will miss Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt according to LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander and Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva.

“Recent media reports regarding Coach Will Wade are without question concerning to all of us,” the statement read. “As such, we and university officials have taken deliberate and purposeful steps to fairly assess and adequately address this situation. As we have done since media reports first surfaced months ago, we are closely coordinating with the NCAA with every step. They have our full cooperation and we will continue to report to them all facts and information on this matter.

“All of us at LSU share the obligation to protect the integrity of this institution, as such we have suspended Head Coach Will Wade indefinitely until such time as we can ensure full compliance with the NCAA, as well as institutional policies and standards. Assistant coach Tony Benford will assume the duties of interim head coach.”

Benford has previous head coaching experience, serving five years as the head coach of North Texas before he was dismissed after the 2016-2017 season. Before that he was an assistant and eventual associate head coach for Marquette from 2008 to 2012.

Whether Wade will be suspended for the SEC tournament or NCAA tournament is yet to be determined.

Wade is in his second season with LSU in which time he has gone 33-20 and bolstered the program with huge signing classes. His previous stints were two years with VCU and two years with Chattanooga.

The Tigers stand at 25-5, 15-2 in conference play, and No. 10 in the rankings. Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt is senior night with at least a share of the SEC title on the line.
