About CyberGhost

The starting point for our CyberGhost review was to check into the organisation’s history. And we were pleased to discover that this is an operation that’s been around for well over a decade - with over 38 million customers. Although the company has its headquarters in Romania, there’s also a highly active software development team working out of Germany. The organization is committed to promoting uncensored use of the internet, and constantly strives to add extra value to its VPN service. We’re happy to reassure you that CyberGhost is legit and a safe option to sign up to.

CyberGhost is exceptionally user friendly

When you’re searching for the best VPN for your needs, there’s much more to consider than just the safety and privacy aspects. Although some users will be familiar with the terminology and features available, there will still be plenty of newbies who won’t have any previous knowledge or experience of VPNs and how they work.

Our CyberGhost reviews discovered that the service is aimed at absolutely everyone, which is indicated at least in part by the fun graphics throughout the site, depicting cartoon-style ghosts. In fact, CyberGhost subscribers like to refer to themselves as ‘Ghosties’, gliding through the worldwide web without leaving any digital footprints, free from being tracked, hacked or monitored by governments or scammers.

Even if this is your first experience of using a VPN, CyberGhost aims to make it as easy and intuitive as possible with plenty of help and assistance along the way, as we’ll be explaining later on this review.

No logs policy at CyberGhost

CyberGhost is based in Romania, which has robust privacy laws in place. And since Romania is outside the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances - which monitor and log user data - you can be completely reassured that your data won’t be shared with government organizations or Internet Service Providers. CyberGhost guarantees not to keep any activity logs, ever, so you’ll retain complete privacy with regards to your:

  • IP address.
  • VPN server connections.
  • Browsing history.
  • Session times.
  • Bandwidth usage.

Independent audit confirms no logs

It’s one thing for a VPN service to claim no logs, but CyberGhost doesn’t ask you to take their word for it. The organization arranged an independent audit by Deloitte during 2022, with a particular focus on ensuring the privacy and security of service users. The audit confirmed that the privacy policy is as described by CyberGhost, with absolutely no logs – ever. You don’t need to spend any time worrying about whether CyberGhost is safe, as the audit has officially confirmed that it is.

A wide variety of CyberGhost apps for all your connected devices

Once you’ve signed up for a CyberGhost account, you can secure up to 7 of your devices at once. So not only can you protect your computer, laptop, tablet and smartphone, but your router, your smart TV and even your gaming consoles will also be covered. Simply download the required apps, follow the onsite guides and you can rest assured that your online sessions are kept strictly between you and the sites you visit – and even they won’t know your IP address or your location.

CyberGhost is compatible with Windows, Android, Mac, iOS and Linux devices. And if you’re using Windows, there’s an option to gain extra protection from the CyberGhost Security Suite System, which is far superior to Windows Defender, for an extra layer of protection.

Additional features at CyberGhost

Anonymity and data security are assured when you use CyberGhost to browse the internet. But like all top-level VPN services, CyberGhost makes sure to include some extra features to add extra value to its users, including a Kill Switch, split tunneling and a dedicated IP address option.

Kill Switch

Using a VPN keeps your data secure, but what happens if your connection is interrupted for some reason? There are all sorts of reasons why you might experience a disconnection, including crowded servers or an issue with your settings. But the big problem is that it leaves your data exposed – and you might not even become aware of that fact until it’s too late.

That’s never going to be a problem with CyberGhost, as the Kill Switch is automatically activated whenever you use the VPN. Most operators who offer a Kill Switch include it as an optional feature, meaning users might not even be aware that it’s available. So CyberGhost removes any uncertainty by enabling it across all its apps for Mac, iOS, Windows and Android as standard.

As soon as you start using CyberGhost the Kill Switch is working in the background, monitoring your connection. Our CyberGhost review found that even the slightest disruption to your connection will cause all internet traffic to be blocked for 120 seconds, allowing for the VPN to reconnect securely. The system also alerts you to the problem, so you have the option of connecting via an alternative server or disabling the feature.

Split Tunneling

Many VPN users find they like to use the service to access some sites, while using their standard ISP connection for others. Rather than having to keep disconnecting and reconnecting to your VPN service, CyberGhost offers a split tunneling feature to make online browsing easier and more convenient.

CyberGhost routes all traffic through the VPN tunnel automatically, hiding your IP address and encrypting all traffic. But there’s an option to set rules allowing some apps to bypass the VPN and use your main connection provided by your ISP. This can be done while the VPN connection is inactive – head for the Settings menu, then VPN and App Split Tunnel, before setting your custom rules about which apps can bypass the VPN.

Dedicated IP address

When you connect to the internet using CyberGhost, or any other VPN, you’ll be sharing IP addresses with lots of other users, masking your identity and location. But depending on the sites you visit, you may find that you have to complete CAPTCHAs to prove you’re not a bot, or you might even have trouble accessing some sites altogether, such as banks and other financial institutions.

CyberGhost offers its users the option of a dedicated IP address, so websites will be able to identify you as a regular visitor, saving you from having to go through verification checks every time you return. This can also lead to faster speeds too, as you won’t be sharing your IP address with multiple other users at the same time.

Anonymity is still assured

You don’t need to have any concerns that CyberGhost will be able to track or monitor your activity using a dedicated IP address. A token system means that the service doesn’t hold any records, so there’s no link at all between your CyberGhost VPN account or your email and your IP address. And you can switch between shared and static IP addresses with just one click, placing you firmly in control of your online activities.

CyberGhost is good for streaming and torrenting

One of the benefits of a VPN is that it enables you to unlock geo-fenced streaming services, so you can access media that wouldn’t otherwise be available to you. A common complaint with many such services is that they’re too slow, causing unwanted lags, stutters and buffering, none of which is conducive to an enjoyable viewing experience. And some VPNs simply can’t unlock major streaming services, such as Netflix and Hulu.

Streaming-optimized servers

CyberGhost offers some of the fastest VPN speeds available, with many servers now having a bandwidth of 10Gbps - making it an exceptionally good option for streaming. And although Netflix is known to keep making changes to its geo-blocking software, CyberGhost boasts optimized servers that aim to circumvent any updates. Even if you have trouble with one of the Netflix-optimized servers, you’ll find there are always more to choose from.

It’s easy to change the encryption protocol too, with the best options being WireGuard and OpenVPN, both of which are included in the CyberGhost package. But it’s not just Netflix that you can watch using CyberGhost. The service enables UHD streaming of most popular services including Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, iPlayer, HBO Max and Disney+.

Torrenting and gaming at CyberGhost

According to the findings of our CyberGhost review, torrenting-optimized servers make light work of P2P file sharing. And if you’re a gamer, you can enjoy playing CoD, Fortnite, Final Fantasy and all your other favorites with no freezing, no lag and reduced ping.

CyberGhost is a cost-effective VPN

In the next part of our review, we turn our attention to CyberGhost pricing. Not all VPNs offer a free trial, but CyberGhost does, as well as up to a 45-day money back guarantee if you dive straight into a paid plan.

1. Limited time free CyberGhost trial

The free trial period is very limited for Windows and MacOS devices, lasting just 24 hours – although that should be long enough to put the service to the test and find out if it meets your needs. There’s a 3-day trial for Android devices, increasing to 7 days for iOS phones and tablets. You don’t need to dig out your credit card to get started, and you’ll have full access to all of the service’s premium features, so you can really put it through its paces.

2. A choice of CyberGhost price plans

As with just about all VPNs, registering for a monthly plan is expensive. At CyberGhost the monthly plan costs almost $13, so there seems little reason to select this option, especially when you consider that you can take advantage of the free trial, which provides you with premium features too. The cost falls the longer you sign up for, with the two-year deal being exceptionally competitive, at a little over $2 per month.

3. CyberGhost price plan table

Plan length Cost per month Money-back guarantee
1 month $12.99 14 days
6 months $6.99 45 days
2 years $2.19* 45 days

* 2 months’ free with 2 year plan

You also have the option of adding on the CyberGhost Security Suite for Windows, for an extra $1 per month, which seems very little for the extra peace of mind it provides. Not only does it provide 24/7 protection from malicious online threats, but the Security Updater automatically ensures all apps are updated with the latest security patches. This feature is currently only available for Windows devices from Windows 7 onwards, but other operating systems may be included in the future.

CyberGhost provides plenty of help and support

For the next stage of our CyberGhost review we examined the support options. Most of the VPNs we’ve looked at offer a Support or Help Center filled with useful information, but CyberGhost takes an even more comprehensive approach, with the inclusion of a dedicated Privacy Hub.

Privacy Hub

Whether you want to know how to delete your Google search history or view the latest CyberGhost quarterly transparency report, the Privacy Hub is the section of the site to head for. There’s information about all the latest online security news, as well as articles about digital freedom, social media, entertainment and much more – including all the latest product updates. You can subscribe for newsletters too, so you never miss out on anything important. And there’s also the chance to earn a financial reward, if you can manage to identify a bug in the system.

Help Center

If you’re new to the world of VPNs, or you need any assistance in setting up your CyberGhost apps, the Help Center is the place to be. This is one of the most comprehensive resources we’ve come across, divided into sections covering Guides, Troubleshooting, FAQs and Announcements. Whether you need some help with setting up the Security Suite for Windows, or you want to check on the security of your email address, this is where you’ll find the answers.

Helpful support staff at CyberGhost

The Help Center is so informative that there’s every likelihood you’ll find the answer to just about all of your questions there. But if you still need more assistance, it’s available around the clock at CyberGhost. If your query isn’t too urgent you can fill out a support request, providing as much detail as possible. Or you can use the Live Chat feature, with a response usually available within just a couple of minutes. All support team members are professional and helpful, going out of their way to ensure any issues are resolved as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Our overall conclusion on CyberGhost VPN

As we approach the end of our CyberGhost review, we can’t help but be impressed by the service. This is a VPN offering some of the fastest speeds around, with servers that are optimized for UHD streaming, gaming and torrenting. The extra features enable users to customize the platform to their precise needs, and if there are any problems, the support available is about as comprehensive as it gets.

If you decide to test CyberGhost for yourself you have the option of a free trial or a money-back guarantee, so there’s really nothing at all to lose. The two-year subscription package offers outstanding value for money, and one account covers absolutely all your online devices, giving you complete peace of mind at an affordable price.
