The Modern Age has a number of different Leader and Civilization combinations for players to choose from in Civ 7, but some will help you close out games better than others. Here are our top 5 suggestions for strong synergies in this Age, covering a range of playstyles and win conditions that should suit any player.
The synergies here are clear as you will likely head into the Modern Age with a slew of Towns when playing as Augustus. Great Britain will help you to keep those rolling, purchase buildings more effectively, and continue expanding and producing Gold. Play as wide as possible, keep your Settlement cap high, and continue settling Towns (or taking them) in the Modern Age.
This combination works to counteract the Science drawbacks of the Qing with early Science progress with the Han and Ming, which both provide avenues to get your Science ahead early. But, when it comes to the Modern Age, we want as much yield as we can get each turn, even if it comes at the cost of some Science, which is exactly what this build achieves with its many Trade bonuses.
Ada Lovelace is another DLC character featured here, and for good reason. Her synergy with Mexico can create a ton of Culture in the Modern Age, and is the best combination for a Cultural win that we have in the Modern Age. This comes off of the back of a strong Culture foundation, starting with Greece and Spain.
In another video, Rob also suggests a Mayan and Hawaiian progression to the Modern Age with Mexico, which you can see more about below.
Because Harriet Tubman unlocks America in the Modern Age inherently, we can be a lot more flexible with what Civilizations we are looking to play in the previous two Ages, assuming you aren’t playing with an Advanced Start. Because of that, we go with Maya and Hawaii to progress both Science and Culture, while still expanding.
This comes to an apex in the Modern Age, where America allows us to really start stepping on the toes of those around us on the map. And, thanks to her incredible unique ability granting War Support, this combination can do it all.

Last, but not least, is what we believe to be one of the strongest of any combination in Civ 7 between Confucius and Meiji Japan, which is arguably one of the strongest Modern Age Civilizations. This duo allows for incredible Science stacking, getting benefits from both Overbuilding and Specialists.
All in all, this is a great path for any Science players and is our top pick for Modern Age Leader and Civilization combinations.
