If you are booting up a game of Civ 7 for the first time, one of your first choices will be what Leader and Civilization you will play in the game’s Antiquity Age. So, for those of you looking for the best combination of these two, here are our top five picks for the best Leader and Civ combinations in Civilization 7.
If you are a fan of the CivHaus YouTube channel for a little bit, you have likely seen Connor’s Let’s Play with this combination, which has proved to be super effective. Your Jaguar Slayers are great early-game Scout units that can lay traps and explore the map for you, giving way to Espionage as you meet your fellow Leaders.
If you are looking for a tried and true civilization experience, look no further than Augustus and Rome. This combination offers you great unique units in the Legion and the Leagtus, which synergize very well with Augustus’s Cultural emphasis. This combination should allow you to do just about any element of the game well, with its only weak point potentially being science.
This list wouldn’t be complete without Machiavelli, who we believe to be one of the best leaders in the game at the moment. We have found pairing him with the Mississippian civ to be an especially strong combination as it gives you a solid military unit with the Burning Arrow and a great unique Merchant with the Watonathi. If you like stacking gold, taking units from City-States, and declaring Wars left and right, consider trying this combination.

On the complete opposite side of the coin, Confucius and the Han Civ or a great choice for anyone who would prefer a quieter playthrough scaling Science and using the Great Wall and Chu-Ko-Nu unique unit to defend from any would-be attackers. This is a true all-out Science build, with the diplomacy side only helping to further supplement your sprawling cities.
And, last but not least, Xerxes the Achaemenid and Aksum, which earns our pick for the strongest Antiquity Age Leader and Civ combination in Civ 7. This combination May one day warrant its own breakdown, but what you are able to do in the Antiquity Age is incredible, and very adaptable to any playstyle.
If you would prefer, you can completely scale culture and use all of your excess gold to funnel more into that side of your Empire. Or, maybe you have an aggressive neighbor who you just can’t shake, and you need to focus on units? Well, the excess gold you can earn from all of your trading, the Hawilt unique building, and having +2 gold on all resources should be able to supplement any endeavor.
All in all, this combination has felt incredible and we strongly encourage you to give it and all of these other choices a try. If you do, we’d love to hear your feedback on which was your favorite to try out! We’d also love to hear what combinations you love, but didn’t see on this list.
