Civ 7 players will begin their adventure, unless they choose an advanced start, in the Antiquity Age of the new game. In this Age, players will lay the foundation of their empire and set themselves on the path to success. To help you dominate this era, even on higher difficulties, here are our five tips.

In Civ 7, Scouts are back to being a core early game unit, as exploration around the map is a premium resource. You do not want to fall behind and let a neighboring civ snag a valuable commodity, or miss out on seeing an army coming to your borders. So, make sure you spend early production on getting 1-2 Scouts online and having at least some form of a military to accompany them. It may feel like you are falling behind on buildings, but its better to be in that position than one where you may find yourself losing the game early. Protect yourself!
The tile you choose for your Capital has always been one of the keys to a successful game of Civ, and Civ 7 is no different. Ensure you check what your surrounding tiles will give you within a 3-tile radius of where you found your Capital. Ideally, you have a good balance of food, production, gold, happiness, and 1-2 commodity resources in your starting city. This will drastically help you to scale and get a good start, which is crucial on Deity difficulty.
With the new Legacy Path system, you can run into trouble if you completely neglect a single part of the game like culture, military, science, or economy. If you do, your civ may be at risk for entering into a Dark Age, which can give you negative effects that hinder your ability to otherwise progress smoothly. So, while you still should be identifying a long-term path to victory, don’t let it come at the cost of any single Legacy Path.

This one is a bit more in the weeds for newer players, but you can get some real value out of placing your districts alongside one another and stacking the bonuses you get from those. Don’t isolate your Urban Districts and other major tile improvements, and look for ways where you can line them up, preferably around your city center tile. A YouTuber, One More Turn, showed exactly how strong this can be in one of their latest videos if you’d like to see it in action.
One of the biggest changes to Civ 7 is the addition of a new currency called Influence. This is used to sway City-States, can give you advantages in wars, allows you to become allies with other civs, and so much more. There is not a playstyle in Civ 7 that doesn’t benefit from Influence, so make sure you are finding different ways to get it early and often.
