Plup Seamlessly Takes the First Super Smash Melee World Championship

On December 17-19, 2021, “Beardog Events” held the first “Smash World Tour” for Super Smash Bros. Melee in Orlando, Florida. As the name implies, the tournament had the top Melee players worldwide compete for the title of “World Champion.” The stage was set, but only one player could be crowned the Melee World Champion. It was hard-fought, but Justin “Plup” McGrath could take the gold and be the inaugural Super Smash Melee World Champion.

Smash World Tour: Melee Singles

With players such as Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma, Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett, Zachary “SFAT” Cordoni, Linus “Pipsqueak” Nordin, Álvaro “Trif” Moral and Masaya “aMSa” Chikamoto in attendance, the Melee singles tournament was set to be one of the hypest tournaments yet. However, the top eight had some surprising outcomes even with these big names. For starters, the top six had zero spacies (Fox & Falco) or Marths, something that is unheard of in the Melee scene.

Surprisingly two Peach players made it into the top eight, with those two being Polish and Trif. While Peach has been a dominant character in Melee’s past, thanks to Armada. Peach hasn’t been seen placing high in a major tournament for a while, with only a few slipping through the cracks occasionally. Even still, Polish and Trif showed that more innovations are still left to be made with Peach. Even showing giving Hungrybox flashbacks to the old Armada days when Polish 3-0 Hungrybox in losers round five. The two Peaches inevitably faced Losers semi-FInals where Polish took the set 3-0.

Wizzrobe and Plup yet again showed their elite form in this tournament. With both players dominating their respective brackets. It seemed to be a toss-up between these two players who would take first place even with Plup’s 11-1 record against Wizzrobe. However, when they both met in winners finals, Plup took the set handily over Wizzrobe, 3-1.

Wizzrobe had to face off against Polish in losers finals. Unfortunately for Polish, Wizzrobe has an excellent track record against Peaches and showed he still had it, taking the set 3-0. With only Wizzrobe and Plup left in grand finals, it looked like Plup had it in the bag. The two had a few close games. Against Wizzrobe, Plup was able to clutch the tournament out with a 3-1 victory over Wizzrobe.

With Smash Summit 12 just happening and The Smash World Tour finishing up. The Smash Melee scene has had a terrific 2021. Even still, 2022 looks to be even better as Genesis 8 kicks off 2022 for Smash Melee fans.
