The two spring football leagues, the XFL and the USFL are close to a full merge, making them one entity to compete with the NFL. This iteration of the XFL was announced in 2018 and relaunched in 2020. The new USFL was announced in 2021 and kicked off in 2022.
PFF’s Ari Meirov reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday.
The XFL officially kicked off in 2020, but was cancelled midseason due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A group including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson bought the XFL in 2021, and finally kicked off again in February of 2023. The Arlington Renegades won the title.
In the 2022 season, the Birmingham Stallions defeated the Philadelphia Stars to become the first champion of the newly-formed league. They, then, defended their title in the 2023 season and won the USFL Championship in back-to-back seasons.
There is not enough information at time of writing to fully flesh out what this merger will look like. It is unknown whether every team will be a part of the merger, or what divisions and conferences may look like. Stay tuned to TGH for more on this developing story, which may be confirmed this week.
