The Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm are set to play a preseason game at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. The WNBA played its inaugural Canadian game in Toronto last year and is set to return to Canada in 2024.
The Chicago Sky faced the Minnesota Lynx last year in the league’s first international game since 2011. The WNBA has also played in Manchester, England in 2011 and Monterrey, Mexico in 2004.
The league who is already expanding to the Bay Area in 2025 is seeking to increase its popularity in international markets too. Last year Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said of the game, “It felt really coordinated. Someone holds up a sign that says ‘Toronto wants WNBA,’ people go crazy. It just felt like everyone was locked in on what the mission was: it was to make this an incredible environment. And they did that.”
She added, “I think we’re going to look back on this and say this was really meaningful. And hopefully then Toronto comes in at some point and hopefully it’s a model for other cities that want to do the same thing.”
Canada is not foreign to the American basketball market with the Toronto Raptors playing in the NBA.
The 2023 competition was sold out the day they were made available in March. Last years venue held 19,800 seats and this years competition has a capacity of 19,500. League merchandise in the arena was sold out by halftime.
Sparks co-owner Magic Johnson said, “Showcasing some of the league’s top talent in Canada is a great opportunity to continue building dedicated WNBA fans outside of the U.S.”
Similar to last years game it is less about the two individual teams playing and more about the overall movement and meaning behind the game.
Tickets for the WNBA Canada Game go on sale on March 20 with the game on May 5.
