What Sports Are Not Practiced in College

Publish Date: September 7, 2021

Why are so many students eager to enter college? It’s probably due to the opportunity to start a career in sports and become one of the NCAA athletes. First of all, it lets the individual be awarded an athletic scholarship and read mentions about themselves in various sports resources. College sports are growing in number and popularity. 15-20 years ago educational institutions could offer their students to play only the basic and most widespread kinds of sports, such as football, basketball, soccer, and the like. Now colleges have facilities to practice ice skating, canoeing, boxing, and activities you have never heard of.

There are many articles devoted to top college sports, so we decided to make a reverse top and tell you about sports that aren’t practiced in college. And it turned out to be difficult enough: we have already mentioned that colleges constantly expand the range of facilities and athletic programs respectively. It was a kind of challenge for us, but we finally managed to find some spirits you can’t play while studying for a college diploma. This information will be interesting for sports fans and prospective students who may have certain expectations for college.

Expectations often don’t meet reality, especially in college, and it’s okay. This situation is commonly observed among students who start their first year at college and are shocked after seeing the workload. Fortunately, students can ask for academic assistance online and never suffer because of the abundance of assignments. If you can’t identify the reliable service, check what wrote john milovich in his review and ask for help from trustworthy websites only.

Let’s check what sports you can’t play in college nowadays.

Bobsleigh

Not so many winter sports can be practiced in college, and unfortunately, bobsleigh isn’t one of them. However, it’s impossible to say that this sport isn’t popular: quite many people practice it and plan to become Olympic athletes. This activity has a long and rich history: the bobsleigh was first played in 1870. The team in bobsleigh consists of 2-4 members, depending on the size of a sleigh. The aim of athletes is to speed up and pack in the sleigh to go down the iced track. In truth, this sport is rather dangerous because the sleigh’s speed can reach 150 km/h. However, the organizers of competitions construct a track the way it slows down the sleigh in itself. Thus, the maximum speed reached on track is 130-135 km/h.

Esports

It may seem that esports became an official sport a few years ago, but in reality, its history dates back to the end of the 20th century. Do you know when the first video game competition took place? It happened in 1972 at Stanford University. No one had thought that this event was the beginning of a new era. New video games started to appear and attract people to play them. One of the most important tournaments happened in 1990 — Nintendo World Championship, in 1996 — Evolution Championship Series, 1994 – Nintendo PowerFest, etc. Colleges haven’t incorporated these sports yet, but we may see it in the near future.

Motorsport

Those who want to work in the motorsport industry and go to college to obtain some knowledge of it may apply to an engineering program. It’s the only way colleges interact with racing. There are no athletic programs and facilities letting students practice their racing skills. Perhaps the danger is one of the reasons why colleges don’t offer such an opportunity to their students. Well, the wide number of racing schools makes college racing programs unnecessary. Is there any need to hire a pro racer, when those who want to join racing may apply to specialized schools and pass high-quality training under professional guidance?

Netball

Don’t confuse this sport with basketball: netball originated from basketball, but now it’s a separate activity. Netball is played by women only. As you probably know, basketball was invented by a physical education teacher in 1891. The next year, a woman working in the same position in college adapted the rules for women and made this game popular in the USA, UK, and other countries. Netball rules are similar to basketball, but if we compare these two activities, it’ll turn out that netball is less of a contact game. US colleges don’t offer netball programs probably because women are good at playing basketball. However, there’s also a chance that netball will become one of the NCAA sports soon.

The bottom line

You’ve probably hoped to see more sports here, but the reality is such. Creating this complication was rather difficult because colleges seem to offer everything one may need. However, as we see, there’s room for improvement and sports to be practiced. The high stakes are for esports, and we suppose that all students will be glad when their colleges can offer them to become professionals in playing games they like.
