Every year, transfers flood the college football offseason news. This is especially true for quarterbacks, who look for the best opportunity to see the field. Here are the top quarterback transfers for the 2024 college football season.
Gabriel gained plenty of experience at two different schools so far in his college career. He started at UCF, where he played for three seasons. The last two seasons, he has played for Oklahoma. In his highly-productive career, Gabriel has passed for 14,865 yards, 125 touchdowns and 26 interceptions on 63.1 percent completion.
Now Gabriel joins Oregon, a team that has national championship aspirations this season. He will have some speedy receivers to throw to in Tez Johnson and Evan Stewart. Gabriel also has some experience on the offensive line ahead of him. Gabriel’s accuracy and mobility make him a good fit for an Oregon offense that ranked second in scoring last season and may be successful again in 2024.
Howard played the last four seasons at Kansas State. He wasn’t the full-time starter until last season, and even then, he split time with Avery Johnson near the end of the season. Howard did show enough to have some faith in him this season. With the Wildcats, Howard passed for 5,786 yards, 48 touchdowns and 25 interceptions on 58.8 percent completion. He also rushed for 921 yards and 19 touchdowns.
At Ohio State, Howard is a key part of a national title contender. He has plenty of talent all around him. Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson create the best running back duo in the country. The wide receiver room is stocked with talent and brings back Emeka Egbuka to give them some big game experience. The defense is set, but if Howard can operate Chip Kelly’s offense well enough, the Buckeyes can bring home the CFP trophy.
Leonard was a big part of helping Duke turn things around under Mike Elko. He played three seasons for the Blue Devils, starting two of them. The two years he started, Duke won eight and nine games. Over his career, he has passed for 4,450 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on 61. 7 percent completion. He has added 1,224 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground.
Notre Dame continues to net transfers to play quarterback after getting Jack Coan and Sam Hartman over the last few years. The Fighting Irish will hope they can make the expanded College Football Playoff this season with Leonard’s help. The Fighting Irish have a young star at running back in Jeremiyah Love to help Leonard. They also vastly improved the wide receiver room by adding Kris Mitchell (FIU) and Beaux Collins from the transfer portal. While new faces need to step up on the offensive line to protect Leonard, there is potentialfor the offense to once again rank in the top 10 for scoring.
Ward has plenty of college experience under his belt. He started off his career at the FCS level with Eastern Washington. Ward transferred to Washington State, where he played the last two seasons. In those two years, he has put up some nice numbers. He has thrown for 6,968 yards, 48 touchdowns and 16 interceptions on 65.5 percent completion. His legs have been an added factor, as he has 202 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Miami was able to win Ward’s services in the transfer portal after he briefly entertained the idea of entering the NFL Draft. The Hurricanes also recruited a talented running back Damien Martinez from Oregon State. With wide receivers Jacolby George and Xavier Restrepo having some real talent, Miami’s offense can take a huge jump in 2024. A good season could see Ward boost his draft stock and the Hurricanes compete for the ACC Championship.
Aidan Childs, Michigan State Spartans– Childs saw some playing time at Oregon State last year and now rejoins head coach Johnathan Smith at Michigan State.
Dequan Finn, Baylor Bears– After lighting up MAC defenses at Toledo, Finn has to be good at Baylor this season for head coach Dave Aranda to turn things around.
Taylen Green, Arkansas Razorbacks– Green was the starter at Boise State last season. With his athleticism and Bobby Petrino’s play-calling, the Arkansas offense could be improved.
K.J. Jefferson, UCF Knights– Things didn’t quite work out at Arkansas, but now Jefferson is at UCF with a creative play-caller in Gus Malzahn, who knows how to call plays for a quarterback with his skillset.
Grayson McCall, NC State Wolfpack– NC State did well last season without great quarterback play and now McCall, one of the most experienced players in college football, should help them.
Kyle McCord, Syracuse Orange– After a so-so season at Ohio State where he protected the football, McCord now joins Syracuse, who could start off the season hot.
Maalik Murphy, Duke Blue Devils– There was not path to the field for Murphy at Texas with Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning also there. He did play decently when used and now he gets his shot with Duke.
Malachi Nelson, Boise State Broncos– A former highly-rated recruit, Nelson didn’t play much for USC last season. At Boise State, he could operate a fun offense that stars he and running back Jeanty.
Will Rogers, Washington Huskies- Mississippi State changed offenses last season and Rogers was less effective. A fresh start with Jedd Fisch leading the way could see him return his productivity.
Tyler Shough, Louisville Cardinals– Shough has talent, but has struggled with injuries throughout his career at Oregon and Texas Tech. Jeff Brohm did well in year one at Louisville and he can build on it with Shough.
D.J. Uiagalelei, Florida State Seminoles- Uiagalelei has gone from Clemson to Oregon State and now to Florida State. His level of play will have to get better, but if it does, the Seminoles could be atop the ACC again.
Brock Vandagriff, Kentucky Wildcats– After sitting behind Stetson Bennett and Carson Beck, Vandagriff now gets his chance to start at Kentucky, where he’ll join an offense with a few talented receivers.
Tyler Van Dyke, Wisconsin Badgers– Van Dyke has shown flashes during his career at Miami and now he could be the key to Luke Fickell’s first good season at Wisconsin if he plays well.
