Shannon showed his talents over five seasons at two different schools at the college level. Now, he is in the 2024 NBA Draft.
As a four-star prospect, Shannon signed with Texas Tech out of Florida. He immediately played a role with the Red Raiders, scoring 9.8 points per game as a freshman. His role increased in his second season, as he scored 12.9 points per game. After his scoring dropped to 10.4 points per game in 2021-2022, he transferred to Illinois. In his first season at Illinois, Shannon averaged 17.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He helped the Fighting Illini make the NCAA Tournament. Last season, he upped his averages to 23.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He led the Illini to the Elite Eight.
After the 2024 NCAA Tournament exit, Shannon declared for the NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.
Terrence Shannon Strengths
Shannon has developed into a three-level scorer over his college career. He scored 23 points per game last season. Shannon can finish at the rim well, getting creative near the basket when he needs. He can shoot from the mid-range and from deep. Although he can be streaky from 3-point range, he makes enough to keep defenses honest. He also hits over 79 percent of his free throws.
He can create for himself with the ball in his hands or when he is playing off the ball. With the ball he can create his own shot, getting open with drives to the basket or pull-up jumpers. He is a talented cutter as well, who can set himself up well for easy opportunities.
At times, Shannon has shown great defensive ability. He can guard a few different positions on the perimeter, using his athleticism and length well. Shannon shows good awareness when guarding the ball and when playing good team defense off the ball. He can pick up steals, although not an extremely high rate, by playing passing lanes well.
Terrence Shannon Weaknesses
Before Shannon can fully be trusted with the ball in his hands for a lot of possessions, he needs to cut down the turnovers. He averaged 2.3 assists to 2.0 turnovers last season. Shannon can work on creating for others and running the pick and roll more efficiently.
He is a good shooter at times, but he can be streaky. Shannon hit about 36 percent of 3-pointers last season, which is ok, but he’ll need to do better in the NBA. Working on shooting off the catch and coming off screens will hep him, as he likely won’t have the ball in his hands a ton to start his career.
While he has great defensive potential, it didn’t show up as much at Illinois as it did at Texas Tech. When he was buying in defensively, he was a good defender. At Illinois he held his own, but he can really create an impact on the defensive side of the ball with more focus.
