Team USA Women’s 5×5 won their second game in the Group Phase of the Olympic Games against Belgium, 87-74. With this win they secured a spot in the Olympic quarterfinals next week.
A’Ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart are proving to be an unstoppable duo. Wilson finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds while Stewart finished with 26 points. Team USA went with the same starting lineup as last time: Wilson, Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Diana Taurasi and Chelsea Gray. No one else on the squad finished in double digit scoring.
For Belgium, Antonia Delaere, Emma Meesseman and Julie Vanloo scored 16, 24 and 11 points respectively. Belgium’s squad is familiar with these W players. Meesseman won WNBA Finals MVP in 2019 with the Washington Mystics while playing in the W from 2013 to 2022. She then left the league to try to grow the game of basketball in her home country. Meanwhile this is Vanloo’s first season in the W.
Team USA will play Germany in the final game of the Group Phase on August 4 at 11:15am EDT. The two faced each other prior to the Olympics on July 23 for an exhibition game in London. USA beat Germany 84-57.
3×3 Gaining Momentum
The Women’s 3×3 team lost their first three games before winning their next three games this Olympics. They face China on August 3 for the final Pool Play match. The play-in games are also on August 3 with the semifinals and bronze medal game on August 5.
The squad is made up of Cierra Burdick, Dearica Hamby, Rhyne Howard and Hailey Van Lith. Van Lith is the only collegiate athlete on the team.
