Team USA Brings Ryder Cup Home at Hazeltine

Publish Date: October 3, 2016

On one of the greatest Sunday’s to watch the game of golf, Team USA has broken an eight-year losing streak and brought the Ryder Cup back to North American soil after recording the win against Team Europe at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Team USA took the trophy in emphatic fashion taking 7.5 points of the 12 on Sunday.

The big matchup was between Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy as they duked it out until the very final hole. McIlroy went up by one on the front but Reed brought it back to a tie with an eagle on the par-4 fifth. McIlroy almost made it to the back nine with a one-hole lead after knocking down a lengthy birdie putt but Reed responded immediately and sank one of his own.

Reed was able to jump out to a two-hole lead after McIlroy carded a bogey on the 12th and couldn’t sink a birdie putt to halve the hole on 16. McIlroy responded quickly knowing his time was wearing thin and capitalized on Reed’s mistake on the 17th to cut Reed’s lead to one. Unfortunately for McIlroy, time was not on his side as Reed matched his birdie on the 18th to halve the hole and take home the point.

Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia was also another key matchup this past Sunday as the two of them shot a combined 19 birdies. The matchup was one of twists and turns, as neither competitor was willing to give in with the lead changing hands four times until it was completed at all square giving each of them .5 of a point.

As the PGA Tour takes a brief one-week hiatus, to cool off from the insanity that was the Ryder Cup, the Tour looks to October 13 as the 2016-2017 season opens with the Safeway Open at Silverado Country Club in Napa, CA.

Until then, I’ll leave you on the lighter side.
