Team USA 5v5 Women’s National Team secure their first win in the Olympic Games. USA beat Japan 102-76 on July 29 in the first game of the Group Phase. They were awarded 2 points for the win.
Team USA is in Group C with Germany, Belgium and Japan.
Diana Taurasi, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, A’Ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray started for the USA squad. They scored the first points and never looked back, leading the whole game. Stewart and Wilson led the way with 22 and 24 points respectively. Wilson also grabbed 13 boards, the only member finishing with double digit rebounds. In addition, Stewart finished with a +/- of 30 and Wilson had a +/- of 20. The rest of the starters combined for 8 points.
The reserves also totaled 48 points for Team USA. Brittney Griner, Sabrina Ionescu and Kelsey Plum all contributed 11 points each. Chelsea Gray dished out 13 assists, leading Team USA in assists.
3 players on Team Japan finished in double figures, Saori Miyazaki, Mai Yamamoto and Maki Takada with 12, 17 and 24 respectively.
Team USA’s Next Action
Team USA takes on Belgium on August 1 at 3 pm EDT.
The squad defeated Belgium 81-79 in the 2024 Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament on February 8 of this year. However, this matchup was prior to the Olympic roster being set.
