The opening bout of the UFC Vegas 87 main card took place in the men’s flyweight division. A matchup between two probable title contenders, Matt Schnell and Steve Erceg. Erceg came out of this one more than victorious. A vicious knockout of Schnell only twenty-six seconds into the second round earned him a fifty-thousand dollar bonus, and Performance of the Night. The Australian improves to 3-0 inside the UFC and 12-1-0 overall as a professional. He only has three fights under his belt, however UFC fans may see him compete for a title by the end of 2024.
The answer is yes, UFC fans could see Erceg fighting for the flyweight title by the end of 2024. The current champion, Alexandre Pantoja has defeated nine out of the current top ten flyweights in the division. With Erceg officially cracking into the top ten with his KO victory over Schnell, fans could see a title fight line up between the champion, Pantoja and the rising contender, Erceg. Pantoja recently mentioned in an interview that he will be searching for new competition, and listed Erceg and Muhammad Mokaev as potential opponents.
With Erceg only having three fights inside the UFC octagon, a fight between him and Mokaev would be a great matchup for a title eliminator fight. Mokaev’s professional record currently stands at an impressive 12-0-0, with six of his wins coming from inside the UFC octagon. The winner of that fight could then take on Pantoja for the undisputed title. However it plays out, the addition of Steve Erceg to an already stacked flyweight division only adds more excitement.
