On Wednesday the San Jose Sharks gained a point but lost 3-2 in overtime hockey against the Anaheim Ducks. The last game before the All-Star and bye-week break, the Sharks go into the two-week pause 5-3-2 in their last ten.
The Ducks’ Isac Lundestorm opened up scoring at 2:12 in the period with a goal assisted by Mason McTavish and Jakob Silverberg.
Anthony “The Duke” Duclair answered for the Sharks at 6:59 with a power play goal. Shakir “Shak” Mukhamadullin earned his first NHL assist, along with veteran Mika Hoffman.
In the second, Marc-Edouard Vlasic extended his goal streak to three games with Kyle Burroughs and William Eklund assisting. Vlasic’s streak marks his longest goal streak in his career, one that spans 18 years.
Eklund has five assists in the last three games, also on a three-game point streak. The 21-year-old winger was in the lineup playing center, with three faceoff wins in the game.
Playing the second night in a back-to-back matchup, the Sharks could not hold on.
Tying it up for Anaheim was Troy Terry late in the third, assisted by Leo Carlsson and Adam Henrique.
Going into overtime, the Ducks won every faceoff and profited off of it.
All-Star Frank Vatrano scored the game-winner with a wrist shot assisted by Terry and Jackson LaCombe.
Final score, 3-2 Ducks.
The Sharks were outshot 34-28, with Kaapo Kahkonen making 31 saves (.91 save percentage).
Team Teal won 45.5 percent of the faceoffs, with 12-5 of the faceoff wins coming in the first period.
Captain Logan Couture said, “I thought we were the better team for a lot of the game. But in the third period they kind of took over and they had a lot of looks. We looked tired at the end there. We went down to 11 forwards pretty early, down to 10 forwards at one point.”
Forward Alexander Barabanov left the game early in the second period with an undisclosed injury. Going into the bye-week break, Barabanov is considered day-to-day.
Tomas Hertl missed Tuesday and Wednesdays’ games with a lower-body injury, also considered day-to-day.
On Monday, defenseman Mario Ferraro was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury.
The NHL bye-week break overlaps with the NHL All-Star weekend in Toronto.
Sharks return to play against the Winnipeg Jets away from home on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14).
