Raquel Pennington has been competing inside the UFC octagon since 2014. In 16 professional fights, she’s seen one championship title fight in her career and ended up losing to former women’s bantamweight champion, Amanda Nunes. Pennington was once again granted the opportunity for another title shot—this time against rising contender Mayra Bueno Silva. The fight took place at UFC 297 following Nunes’ retirement. Thus leaving the women’s bantamweight title vacant and open for the taking. The bout between Pennington and Bueno Silva went all five rounds, and Pennington claimed the vacant title by unanimous decision. She makes history as the sixth woman to become the UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion.
Raquel Pennington’s next opponent may have already been decided. Former champion, Juliana Peña has been eagerly awaiting a return to the octagon. With her sights set on the newly crowned champion, and no clear contender in line to challenge Pennington for her title, this fight is likely to occur. While Peña is seeking the championship fight, it’ll be Pennington’s call as to who her opponent will be. It’s safe to say we won’t be seeing Raquel’s first title defense until the latter half of 2024.
