Premier League’s Title Race

Publish Date: April 24, 2024

The Premier League’s Title Race is as close as ever as it enters its final act. Manchester City won their most recent game in the league, as Arsenal and Liverpool look to bounce back from setbacks in the league. Here is a rundown of their action.

Manchester City vs. Luton Town: April 13

City exercised complete control in their 5-1 win against Luton. They registered a whopping 37 shots, 13 of which were on target. A Luton player scored the game’s first goal, but in their net. In the second minute, City’s Erling Haaland made an acrobatic effort towards Luton defender Daiki Hashioka’s head, deflecting it into the goal.

City continued peppering the Luton goal but would not break through until the 64th minute. Here, Mateo Kovačić hit a half volley just inside the box with power and precision to make the score 2-0. Then, the floodgates opened.

In the 76th minute, Haaland converted a penalty, and ten minutes later, Jérémy Doku danced between two defenders before nutmegging a third with his shot. This brought the score to 4-1, as Ross Barkley got one back for Luton in the 81st minute.

Finally, Joško Gvardiol scored from outside the box in the 93rd minute, bringing the final score to 5-1.

Liverpool vs. Fulham: April 21

Liverpool opened the scoring in the 32nd minute through Trent Alexander-Arnold. The English International placed a free kick into the top-left corner past Bernd Leno’s outstretched arms.

Despite Liverpool’s control of possession, Fulham pulled one back just before the halftime whistle. Fullback Timothy Castagne fired a loose ball in the box to the far post after a series of deflections to bring the score to 1-1.

Liverpool regained the lead in the 53rd minute when Ryan Gravenberch fired from outside the box into the right-hand side of the goal following a turnover from Fulham. Liverpool would finalize their victory in the 72nd minute. Diogo Jota ran in behind the Fulham defense and fired a shot that stung Leno’s gloves before rolling into the back of the net.

Arsenal vs. Chelsea: April 23

Arsenal football club made it look easy on Tuesday against crosstown rivals Chelsea. A 5-0 win took them to the top of the Premier League table with 77 points after 34 games.

The Gunners’ party started in the fourth minute. Leandro Trossard fired a left-footed shot precisely, aiming for the near post and catching Chelsea goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović off guard.

Arsenal then opened the floodgates in the second half, with Ben White sending a well-placed left-footed shot from just outside the six-yard box past Petrović in the 52nd minute.

Five minutes later, Kai Havertz sent a shot above a diving Petrović after latching to a precise through ball from Martin Ødegaard. Havertz added to his tally in the 65th minute when he quickly shot through a sea of defenders to the near post, leaving rooted to the spot.

The icing on this excellent Arsenal performance came in the 70th minute. Ødegaard chipped a pass to a running Ben White, who tapped the ball first time on the volley, lobbing Petrović in the process to score perhaps the prettiest goal of the night. White was all smiles as he embraced teammate Declan Rice in the celebration, perhaps partly because he most certainly meant to cross that ball.
