New York Liberty Stay Hot

The New York Liberty have won seven games in a row to bring them to 11-2 on the season.

More notably, they won their last three games without point guard, Courtney Vandersloot. Vandersloot missed the past three games due to personal reasons. The Liberty players and head coach, Sandy Brondello all commented leaving her well wishes and sending love her way.

Brondello stated, “We’re all in this together. She’s a valuable teammate and we love her and support her. We look forward to when she’s coming but for right now she’s in our thoughts and prayers.”

Despite this absence the Liberty defeated an undefeated Connecticut Sun last week and clinched home-court advantage in the Commissioner’s Cup final.

The Liberty completed the sweep of their Eastern Conference opponents during the Commissioner’s Cup games against Washington ending 5-0. Jonquel Jones led the team with 29 points and 8 rebounds. They will defend their title on June 25 against the winner of the Western Conference. Last year the Liberty defeated the Las Vegas Aces in the Commissioner’s Cup Championship 82-63.

The Liberty take on the back-to-back reigning WNBA Finals champions, the Aces, on June 15 as their sole game of the week. This comes as a much needed rest time as they just played 5 games in 8 days.

The Liberty lost 3-1 in the 2023 WNBA Finals against the Aces. However the Aces have had a rocky start to the 2024 season, starting 5-4 compared to 2023 when they finished with only 6 losses during the regular season. Chelsea Gray has been out the entire season thus far after suffering a left foot injury in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals. Additionally, Jackie Young missed last Sunday’s game due to illness. The Aces hope to have a full squad is they are looking to three-peat. Meanwhile, the Liberty franchise has never won a WNBA Championship having finished runner-up 5 different years.
