The 2023 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 27 as the first round picks are announced. The second and third rounds take place on Friday, and the whole thing wraps up with the fourth through seventh rounds on Saturday. TGH will be taking a quick look at the first few picks for some teams, and shedding some light on what direction they will go. Here is the Miami Dolphins NFL Draft profile for 2023.
The Dolphins let tight end Mike Gesicki walk in free agency, and it might have been a good time to do it. This tight end class is deep, and considering they don’t have a first round pick after forfeiting it due to tampering, they could take advantage of that in the second round. They also need some depth at linebacker and offensive line, specifically tackle. Injuries have abounded at those positions in current years for Miami.
Pick #51: Drew Sanders, LB, Arkansas
A lot of mock drafts have the Dolphins selecting a running back with their first pick. That wouldn’t be too far off the mark, and neither would a tight end, if a can’t-miss prospect is falling down the board. But depth at linebacker is important in a tackling and pass-rushing league.
At this point, it’s just a matter of picking their favorite available linebacker. Drew Sanders fits the bill, because he can play early and often. Although undersized as of now, a full year of NFL training will certainly stem those concerns. He’s athletic and ready to fly around the field.
Pick #84: Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa
It’s extremely likely that the Dolphins will address tight end with their second rounder, especially if no real run is made on the top-flight talent. If they don’t, though, Sam LaPorta should still be available in the third round.
LaPorta can certainly block, which is good, given the fragility of the offensive line in Miami. He’s not especially speedy, but this is already maybe the fastest offense in the entire NFL. Even more speed at the tight end position would be an insane luxury. The hands and the specific route running are the reason to buy into this pick.
