Matt Ryan Unlikely to Play Again this Season

Publish Date: December 23, 2022

Colts quarterback Matt Ryan is being officially benched for the second time this season. He was originally benched ahead of Week 8 in favor of Sam Ehlinger, but was brought back into the starter’s role after Jeff Saturday was named the interim head coach.

Colts reporter Zak Keefer reported the news via Twitter on Friday.

The two benchings of Ryan are due to cap issues embedded in his contract. If he is released after the season ends, his contract counts as $18 million against the cap next year, but if he stays, the cap hit balloons to $35 million. There’s also money tied to his health in the contract.

Ryan has played and started in 12 games so far this season, his first with the Colts. He’s gone 4-7-1 in these games, completing 67 percent of his passes for 3,057 yards, 14 touchdowns and a league-leading 13 interceptions.

Stay tuned for more breaking NFL content, including midseason moves, contract updates and more news from every team.
