The Formula British Grand Prix on Sunday did not lack for drama. As the drivers championship battle between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes AMG’s Lewis Hamilton heats up, both drivers continue to push each other. At Silverstone this past weekend, Hamilton came out on top. However, this only came after a major incident between Hamilton and Verstappen early.
Hamilton and Verstappen Collide
It did not take very long for the drama to erupt at Silverstone. In just lap 1 of the grand prix, the two drivers championship leaders crashed collided. Hamilton and Verstappen both tried to give each other as much room as possible, but ultimately there was no where for either to go. At turn 9 of the circuit, Verstappen sailed into the wall as a result of the collision.
The race was then stopped with a red flag to clean up Verstappen’s car and repair damages to a tire wall at turn 9. Hamilton was awarded a 10 second penalty by the race stewards for the incident. Tempers were flaring at both the Red Bull and Mercedes pit walls, with both teams throwing blame at the other.
Hamilton Sneaks Away With The Win
Normally a 10 second penalty would spell the end of a shot at first place in Formula 1, but not for Lewis Hamilton. The British driver proved yet again why many consider him the best racing driver in the world. Following the restart of the race, Hamilton remained in second place behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc until lap 28. Hamilton built up an over 20 second lead against the driver in 4th place, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. So when Hamilton came into the pit lane to serve his 10 seconds, he barley lost any time.
When Hamilton came out of the pits, he was in 4th place, but that did not stop him. Hamilton marched back up the positions to eventually pass Charles Leclerc at lap 50 of 52. Hamilton would hold first place for the final laps and take home the checkered flag. This marks Hamilton’s record 8th win at the British Grand Prix.
Drivers Championship Implications
With Max Verstappen crashing out of the race, he could not extend his championship lead with his current total of 185 points. With his win today, Hamilton now now sits at 177 points for the season. Hamilton now sits 8 points behind Verstappen. The competitiveness of this year’s drivers championship has the potential to bring tension right down to the final Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi.
While the complaints about the incedent between Verstappen and Hamilton will undoubtedly continue until the next race in Hungry. With both the drivers and their teams going at full force at all times, it is very possible more incidents like the one at Silverstone will happen again. But that does help create some exciting races and drama. Something Formula 1 fans always crave.
