Kim Runs Away With First Victory

Publish Date: August 22, 2016

Si Woo Kim has found a new love for Sedgefield Country Club. Kim recorded a total score of 21-under-par this past weekend to claim his first PGA Tour win by five strokes. Mother Nature tried her best to rain on Kim’s parade. With two holes left, the weather horn blew to suspend play. Kim had a four-shot lead going into the delay but a collapse couldn’t be ruled out, we’ve all seen stranger things happen on the PGA Tour.

The wet weather would be no issue as Kim came back out and shot a par on the 17th and a birdie on the 18th to tie the lowest 72-hole score on the PGA Tour.

Putting the exclamation mark on his first victory.

Kim didn’t have a stellar weekend on or around the putting surfaces ranking 34th in strokes gained putting and 42nd in strokes gained around the green, but he did make up for it by being stellar in nearly every other part of his game. Kim ranked first in strokes gained off the tee, strokes gained tee to green, and strokes gained total. That’s not to mention a second place ranking in strokes gained- approach to the green. Kim’s putting would have certainly been a bigger issue had he not been on the green in regulation 60 out of 72 attempts. At the end of the day, it really only matters where you land on the leaderboard.

With Kim posting a 21-under for the weekend, many others were left scrambling for second place because he was so far out of reach. Luke Donald finished second at 16-under, and he had a chance to make a run at Kim after getting himself to 16-under through the front nine, but a paltry back-nine would hold him at that score in second place.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Bethpage Black for the 50th edition of the Barclays and the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Until then, I’ll leave you on the lighter side.
