Kam Chancellor announces his retirement

Publish Date: July 10, 2018

This may be the end of the Legion of Boom. Richard Sherman has been signed to the San Fransisco 49ers, and Earl Thomas is looking for a new team. A major weapon to the Seattle Seahawks defense, Kam Chancellor, is retiring from the NFL. Just like every phenomenal superstar, their career always fall because of a season-ending injury.

Reason

Chancellor suffered a crucial neck injury during the 2017-18 season. Til this day, he is still waiting to be cleared, but most likely, the veteran safety is considering to hang up the cleats and call it quits.

“I’ve played through all types of bruises and injuries at a high level, but this one I just can’t ignore,” Chancellor said on Twitter. “If my body says don’t play, I’m not playing. I’ll listen.”

Neck injuries are problems that shouldn’t be ignored. They can either be serious sprains or tears in the muscle. Since the neck is connected to the spinal cord, a neck injury can end up long term; and the athlete could be paralyzed for the rest of his life.

A Look Back

Chancellor was a fifth-round draft pick, back in 2010, the same year Earl Thomas was selected in first round. He was an outstanding football player when he played for Virginia Tech, and he was an outstanding player when he played for Seattle. Along with Sherman, Thomas and Brandon Browner, Chancellor helped create the Legion of Boom. This group is one of the most dominant defensive forces in the NFL, with a team full of aggressive players that love to hit and Chancellor was the main one.

Chancellor has made numerous big hit moments throughout his NFL career. One of the highlights people remember the most was when he laid a vicious hit on former San Francisco 49ers’ tight end Vernon Davis. Another highlight was in Super Bowl XLVIII when he helped lead his team to a 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos. Chancellor had six tackles and an interception.

He was also a four-time pro bowler and had a career total of 606 tackles, two sacks, 11 forced fumbles, 12 interceptions and 44 pass deflections.

Now that Chancellor has stepped down, the Seahawks’ defense will have a different look coming into the new season. There will be young players who will try to make an impact on the team, and there will be veterans teaching them. But they will be missing a lot of key players.
