Jonquel Jones Inducted into George Washington’s HOF

Publish Date: February 12, 2024

The New York Liberty’s forward Jonquel Jones was inducted into George Washington’s Athletic’s Hall of Fame. GW’s athletic director Tanya Vogel led the induction on Friday. Jones played at GW from 2013-2016 after transferring in from Clemson after her first year. Jones ranks third all-time at GW in career rebounds (961), fourth in scoring average (15.4) and fifth in blocked shots (177). She also ranks twenty-third in points total with 1,171 in just seventy-six games played for the Buff and Blue. She is the third Colonial to score 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 100 blocks. Jones led the nation her senior year in rebounding.

Jones was drafted sixth overall in the 2016 WNBA Draft. She is the first person to ever be selected in the first-round for GW. Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks, Jones was acquired by the Connecticut Sun after having her draft rights traded. Since then Jones has been a dominant presence in the league. She earned the 2021 MVP, the 2018 Sixth Woman of the Year and the 2017 Most Improved Player awards. She was a WNBA All-Star in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022 and All-WNBA Defensive Team in 2019, 2021 and 2022. Jones did not play in the 2020 Wubble season.

Jones played her first six seasons in Connecticut and was involved in a three team deal that landed her in New York for 2023. She took that new Liberty superteam to the WNBA Finals in their first year as a group.

Jones is originally from the Bahamas and moved to Maryland when she was fourteen. She attended Riverdale Baptist High School where her coach Diane Richardson became her legal guardian. She earned the 2011-2012 Gatorade Maryland Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Coach Richardson and Jones reunited at George Washington while Richardson was the assistant coach.

The Liberty posted this on social media to congratulate Jones.
