Dick was able to have a very successful year for Kansas in 2022-2023 as a one-and-done player. Now he is in the 2023 NBA Draft.
As a five-star prospect out of Kansas, Dick decided to stay in the state to play for the Jayhawks. During his lone season in Lawrence, Dick averaged 14.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. His play helped Kansas get a number one seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, but they were defeated in the second round.
Following the NCAA Tournament appearance, Dick declared for the 2023 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a lottery pick.
Dick is a great shooter who will stretch the floor for NBA teams. He can sit in the corner and wait for catch-and-shoot opportunities, which he knocks down consistently enough to open the floor for players who are better at driving the basketball. He also can pull up from deep and convert consistently. To go with his good perimeter shooting, Dick is also a good free throw shooter, knocking down over 85 percent of his attempts at the college level.
While he isn’t the best athlete in this class, he is far from just a shooter. He has good body control and has the ability to get to the basket with straight-line drives. Dick can draw defenders out, then attack the rim. His athleticism allows him to finish at the rim, but also can help him run the floor in transition. This also helps him on the defensive end of the floor.
There are a few things defensively that are intriguing about Dick’s defense. Dick has solid athleticism and a 6-foot-9 wingspan to help him guard players on the perimeter well. His effort also shines through here. He can generate steals by jumping passing lanes. His help defense shows his basketball intelligence.
Dick can improve his ball handling to be more of an offensive threat at the next level. He can get to the basket in transition and on straight-line drives, but has limited ability to create for himself. While he can finish at the rim, some teams may just stick him in the corner until he can develop the ability to create for himself and others.
He’ll need to add strength to his game, as he is just 204 pounds. Doing so will help him play through contact better on the offensive end. This will also help him guard bigger wings in the NBA, as right now, they may be able to overpower him.
While there were parts of his defense that are encouraging, he can sometimes lack the ability to stay in front of quicker guards. His team defense and wingspan can help him, but it will be hard for him to see the floor consistently if he can’t stay in front of opponents. Teams will try to make him defend and will make him switch on to better players to get good matchups.
Projected Draft Range: Lottery Pick
