Garrett Williams 2023 NFL Draft Profile

Publish Date: April 24, 2023

The 2023 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Garrett Williams 2023 NFL Draft Profile.

Garrett Williams Background

Position: Cornerback

School: Syracuse

Size: 5-foot-10, 192 pounds

Class: Redshirt Junior

2022 Stats: 36 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, 3 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery

Williams was part of a talented secondary at Syracuse over the last few seasons. Now he is in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Out of high school, Williams was a three-star prospect out of North Carolina who signed with Syracuse in the class of 2019. He appeared in four games during the 2019 season, but redshirted. Williams stepped into the starting lineup in 2020 with two interceptions and nine passes defended. Syracuse struggled with a 1-10 record that season. In 2021, Williams had nine passes defended. He helped Syracuse improve to a 5-7 record. For the 2022 season, he had two interceptions and three passes defended, but missed the backend of the season with a torn ACL.

Following the ACL injury, Williams declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick.

Garrett Williams Strengths

Williams is experienced and good in different types of coverages. He has the ability to mirror routes by receivers in man coverage, staying attached for extended periods of time. In zone coverage, he has good eye balance and uses his solid route recognition.

His athleticism is good for the position. He has quick feet, which allows his footwork to be pretty solid. Williams is able to change directions quickly, which is what helps him stay attached in man coverage. He has solid jumping ability as well to help contest catches.

He is a good tacker for the position, which comes into play against the run and pass. Williams limits receivers after they catch the ball, as he tackles them quickly, which gives them no room to run after the catch. Williams is solid supporting the run, as he can get to the ball and make tackles.

Garrett Williams Weaknesses

Williams will be coming off of a torn ACL heading into his NFL career. He was unable to compete at the NFL Combine and will need to prove he is fully healthy for a team to trust him. His injury may effect his draft stock by a round or two.

During his college career, he had limited ball production. Williams needs to work on being more aggressive at the catch point. He can defend more passes, but also come down with more interceptions than he is currently getting if he attacks the football more.

There are some questions about if Williams has great speed. He can be beat deep, as he struggles to stay with receivers if they push the field vertically. Williams will need to work on his technique and physicality to make sure receivers don’t get past him.

Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fifth Round Pick

Draft Grade: Fourth-Round Grade
