The 2024-25 NFL season has begun which means fantasy football is back! The first week has shown us already that there could be some major differences in the fantasy landscape from last year to this year. But it’s important not to overreact to what happened in the first week of the season because there’s a lot of season left to be played.
Since every week is important it would be irresponsible to start a player with a rough matchup over a player with a more favorable one that is ranked or projected to perform similarly. Here are fantasy football Week 2 running back rankings.
[Ratings are subject to change due to injury reports or possible move to Injured Reserve List]
[Check out the section below for details on players already rumored to possibly miss this week and how their replacement options rank for the week]
Key:
Must Start- a player who is in your lineup regardless of the matchup or most circumstances. They Will likely finish near the top of the league in points that week and in most weeks.
Starting RB1- a player who makes fantasy owners comfortable starting week after week. Regardless of the matchup, this player has a high floor.
High-End RB2- a player who may not be likely to carry a lineup that week, but has the ability to have a breakout game and is teetering between RB1 and RB2 territory.
Starting RB2- a player who should be started in most lineups and should reach their point projection. This player is started because of their consistency and moderately high floor
Low RB2- a player who may not be a lock to start for a team every week, but will start more times than not. Their production may not be pretty or win a person their lineup but the production is consistent enough to make a fantasy owner comfortable starting them.
Flex- a player who could float around the territory of being benched, but is started due to the potential to play better than their point projection. However, this player has the potential to flop and cause a fantasy team to lose if he has a bad game.
Deep League Flex- a player who is more of a Hail Mary throw at the position. There are enough reasons to leave this player on the bench, but their upside makes them an attractive option. Desperate times may call for a player like this to be inserted into starting lineups.
Leave on the Bench- a player who should be avoided in all lineups that week. Many times this player could even be left on waivers.

Players that could miss this week’s game
RB1 Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers
Christian McCaffrey suprisingly missed last week’s game against the New York Jets because of the calf strain he suffered during the preseason. He is currently considered day-to-day with the injury. Early reports say that the 49ers don’t expect McCaffrey to play this week. If McCaffrey misses Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings Jordan Mason becomes the RB19 between Rachaad White and J.K. Dobbins.
Miami Dolphins Running Backs: RB7 De’Vone Achane & RB37 Raheem Mostert
De’Vone Achane missed practice on Tuesday because of an ankle injury. Raheem Mostert missed practice on Tuesday with a chest injury. If both Achane and Mostert miss Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills Jeff Wilson Jr. moves up to RB30 between D’Andre Swift and Jaylen Warren. Jaylen Warren would become the RB34 between Chuba Hubbard and Austin Ekeler.
If Achane misses Week 4 against the Buffalo Bills and Mostert is active, Mostert moves up to RB20 between J.K. Dobbins and Rhamondre Stevenson. Jeff Wilson Jr. moves up to RB45 between Zach Charbonnet and Rico Dowdle. Jaylen Wright would become RB48 between Tyler Allgeier and Miles Sanders.
If Mostert misses Week 4 agianst the Buffalo Bills and Mostert is active Jeff Wilson Jr. moves up to RB45 between Zach Charbonnet and Rico Dowdle. Jaylen Wright would become RB48 between Tyler Allgeier and Miles Sanders.
RB15 Kenneth Walker III, Seattle Seahawks
Kenneth Walker III is dealing with an abdomen injury. He is considered day-to-day making him someone to pay attention to this week. If Walker III misses Week 2 against the New England Patriots Zach Charbonnet moves up to RB25 between Tony Pollard and Devin Singletary.
Players that are currently not expected to play
Jaylen Wright, Miami Dolphins
Expectations for Jaylen Wright were higher than most fourth round running backs when they enter the leagues because the offense he plays in. Many fell like Wright could be this year’s De’Von Achane. But it appears that he is the odd man out who will likely not dress on gamedays barring an injury. At this point Wright is De’Von Achane insurance or insurance for any of the backs in this backfield.
