The 2023-24 NFL season is about to begin which means fantasy football is back! Most fantasy football team managers don’t make major lineup moves in the first week of the season. Typically managers will start the players they drafted in the earlier rounds. However, since every week is important it would be irresponsible to start a player with a rough matchup over a player with a more favorable one because he was drafted to be a starter. Here are fantasy football week 1 tight end rankings.
*Ratings are subject to change due to injury reports or possible move to the Injured Reserve List
(Check out the section below for details on players already rumored to possibly miss this week and how their replacement options rank for the week)
Key:
Must Start- a player who is in your lineup regardless of the matchup or most circumstances. They Will likely finish near the top of the league in points that week and in most weeks.
Starting TE1- a player who makes fantasy owners comfortable starting week after week. Regardless of the matchup, this player has a solid floor.
TD Dependent Starter- a player who may not be a lock to start for a team every week, but will start more times than not because of depth at the position. Their production is based on whether they can get in the end zone or not. It can be the difference between a top 10 performance or a top 25 performance
Deep League Starter- a player whose ceiling isn’t high but should put up enough production to be started in deep leagues. When a player like this is started it is because their production though it will likely be low, will be better than a few options.
Leave on the Bench- a player who should be avoided in all lineups that week. Many times this player could even be left on waivers.

Possible Changes that can occur before Sunday
TE1 Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs
Travis Kelce hyperextended his knee two days before the 2023-24 season opener. It seems likely that Kelce is going to miss the Chiefs’ first game of the season. If Kelce misses Week 1 against the Detroit Lions Noah Gray moves up to TE25 between Cade Otton and Mike Gesicki.
TE2 Mark Andrews, Baltimore Ravens
Mark Andrews has been dealing with an undisclosed injury. However, he is supposed to return to practice this week. If Andrews misses Week 1 against the Houston Texans Isaiah Likely moves up to TE16 between Gerald Everett and Dalton Kincaid.
TE3 T.J. Hockenson, Minnesota Vikings
T.J. Hockenson has been dealing with a lower back issue for most of the preseason. He is expected to play in Minnesota’s first game of the year. If Hockenson misses Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Josh Oliver would become the TE37 between Jonnu Smith and Mo Alie-Cox.
TE8 George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers
George Kittle has been dealing with an undisclosed injury this week that has had him working off to the side of practice. If he was to miss Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers Ross Dwelley would become the TE34 between Adam Trautman and Michael Mayer.
TE22 Zach Ertz, Arizona Cardinals
Zach Ertz is recovering from a torn ACL and MCL. There is a chance he could play in Arizona’s season opener. If Ertz misses Week 1 against the Washington Commanders Trey McBride moves up to TE22 between Greg Dulcich and Hunter Henry.
TE24 Logan Thomas, Washington Commanders
Logan Thomas has been dealing with a calf injury. If he was to miss Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals Cole Turner would become the TE30 between Jake Ferguson and Irv Smith Jr.
TE26 Mike Gesicki, New England Patriots
Mike Gesicki has been recovering from a mild shoulder dislocation. If he misses Week 1 agianst the Philadelphia Eagles Pharaoh Brown could see a lot of snaps as the Patriots’ backup tight end.
