Fantasy football 2018: Late round fliers

Avery SeltzerBy Avery SeltzerAugust 19, 2018Updated:August 19, 20184 Mins Read

What is a “Late Round Flier”

A “late round flier” is a player being selected at the back-end of your fantasy draft. These players can be deemed low risk, high reward, as they will not cost you a high-end draft pick, although may provide high-end fantasy value. The hope is that these players can outperform their ADP, or average draft positions, in order to give you a leg up on your competition.

The following players are being drafted outside of the top-150 overall, although I believe they will significantly outperform their ADP.

Tyrell Williams

Just one year removed from 119 targets, 69 receptions, 1059 yards and seven touchdowns, Los Angeles Chargers’ wide receiver Tyrell Williams seems to be forgotten heading into the 2018 NFL season. On average, the 26-year-old is being selected as the WR65, despite finishing as the WR39 in 2017 and WR14 in 2018 according to pro-football-reference.com.

With the losses of Antonio Gates and Hunter Henry to retirement and injury respectively, a total of 114 targets will be left over from 2017. Not all of these targets will go to Tyrell Williams, with veteran Travis Benjamin and sophomore Mike Williams also vying for legitimate playing time, although for now, the Los Angeles Chargers are only listing two starting receivers on their depth chart, Keenan Allen and Tyrell Williams. Whether Tyrell Williams can remain the secondary receiver, or he is moved to a tertiary role, he will certainly outperform his ADP.

Semaje Perine

With Derrius Guice out for the year and Chris Thompson currently on the shelf, it looks as though sophomore running back Semaje Perine will get the first opportunity to become the Washington Redskins lead back. A fourth-round pick in 2017, Perine amassed 175 total carries, while having six individual games with 17 or more.

Perine won’t shine this season, although he will see an increased workload due to the aforementioned injuries. Perine himself is banged up, as he suffered an ankle injury on his first run of the Redskins second preseason game. Whether Perine will be ready for week one is uncertain, although drafting him at his current ADP of RB56 makes him well worth a flier at the back end of your fantasy football draft.

Quincy Enunwa

After missing the entire 2017 NFL season due to a neck injury, New York Jets’ wide receiver Quincy Enunwa is looking to have a major bounce-back campaign. In 2016, Enunwa managed to turn 105 targets into 58 receptions for 857 yards and four touchdowns, while seeing at least five targets in 13 of his 16 total games that season.

The 26-year-old will battle for a starting job with wide receivers Robby Anderson, Jermaine Kearse, Terrelle Pryor and ArDarius Stewart. Enunwa was the second most targeted Jet in 2016, behind only Brandon Marshall, showing that when healthy, he is a major part of the Jets’ offense. With the suspension of ArDarius Stewart and the expected suspension of Robby Anderson, Quincy Enunwa will be given a great opportunity to regain a starting role in New York. One red flag is that Enunwa is currently banged up with a minor hand injury, although this should not be of too much concern, as he expects to be back on the field before their third preseason game.

Enunwa is currently being selected on average as the WR82 and the 258th overall according to fantasypros.com, making him well worth a late-round flier in all fantasy formats.
