Although he wasn’t a blue-chip prospect and didn’t go to a big name school, Montgomery was able to stand out as a good college football running back. He is now one of the most sought-after running back prospects for the 2019 NFL Draft.
Montgomery entered Iowa State as a three-star prospect, but earned his way onto the field as a freshman. He rushed for 563 yards and two touchdowns. As a sophomore, he was the lead back in the Cyclone backfield with 1,146 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.earning him a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team. For his senior season, Montgomery topped those numbers with 1,216 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. His rise coincided with Iowa State’s, as they won three games when he was a freshman and won eight the following two seasons.
After helping resurrect Iowa State, Montgomery is now looking forward to the 2019 NFL Draft. He should expect to be selected within the first three rounds of the draft.
Strengths
His power is also really good for a draft prospect. He is not afraid to lower his shoulder and lean into defenders. Montgomery also runs through his fair share of arm tackles. When he is tackled, he usually falls forward, which gave his team a yard or two extra per carry.
He will be able to play on third downs, as he is very useful when his team is passing the ball. Montgomery is a decent receiver, which gives the defense another threat to worry about. His pass protection is also very good. He has the necessary strength to hold up against most types of pass rushers. His strength is made even more useful because he squares up the defender and hits him straight on.
Weaknesses
His patience is good, but it could be a detriment at the NFL level because of his lack of burst. Once he sees the hole, he needs to get up the field quickly or he runs the risk of being tackled from behind. Even if he doesn’t get stopped behind the line, it will limit how many yards he can pick up on the play.
Montgomery’s long speed is also a huge question mark. He may be able to keep the chains moving with his patience, but he will be tracked down by defenders relatively easily because he doesn’t have good long speed. He’ll need to keep the chains moving and be durable rather than being a home run hitter.
He also isn’t very elusive, as he makes generic cuts to get more room, but hardly ever can beat defenders without anything but power. This again could be a factor in limiting how many big plays he can produce.
Projected Draft Range: Second Round-Third Round
