MMA fans around the world have been asking the same question for months now. When will Conor McGregor officially return to the octagon? McGregor and Michael Chandler had agreed to go head-to-head against each other as coaches in ‘The Ultimate Fighter’. The thirty-first season of the show between McGregor and Chandler concluded airing in August of 2023. Since then, fans have eagerly awaited the fight announcement between the two coaches. Well, almost five months later and there is official news on the fight.
McGregor posted a video from his personal ‘X’ account on New Years Eve, breaking the big news.
McGregor suggested the weight class in which this fight will take place, which added an interesting aspect to the conversation. “The weight Mr. Chandler, 185 pounds.” McGregor’s last five fights inside the octagon have been at lightweight. Chandler has also fought at lightweight for the majority of his time spent in the octagon. A potential fight between the two at middleweight would be something UFC fans have never seen before. If McGregor were to win against Chandler at 185 pounds, he’d be the only fighter in UFC history to win in four different weight classes.
While the thought of this playing out at the UFC’s International Fight Week on June 29 seems thrilling, it doesn’t appear they have finalized it. Dana White and the UFC haven’t officially announced the date of their fight, nor backed Conor in his video post. Until Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler sign the contracts, it’s safe to say they’ll be fighting at some point during 2024. Until then, UFC fans around the world will have to continue to wait for the return of one of the most beloved athletes who has graced the sport.
