After an easy victory in week 18 against the Las Vegas Raiders the Chiefs can breathe easier. After their road win the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC goes through Kansas City.
Kansas City opted to play their starters for the vast majority of their week 18 game. This was to ensure the Chiefs clinched the number one seed even though the game was very lop-sided.
It might be important to know that the Chiefs during the Patrick Mahomes era have yet to reach the Super Bowl as the number one seed with three appearances as the AFC’s top dog during his tenure.
The Chiefs’ two toughest competitors the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals are division winners. This means that the only time Kansas City will have to play these teams is a potential AFC Championship game.

The beauty of the number one seed in the NFL playoffs is the first-round bye. This gives coaches like Andy Reid an enormous advantage. Mostly when it comes to planning and for getting healthier. There isn’t a single team in the AFC that wants to travel to Kansas City after a bye week.
The number one seed in the AFC is a big deal. But the value is lessened in value this year with a neutral site looming large for the AFC championship game after the scary scene involving Damar Hamlin. After the life-threatening injury and game cancellation, the AFC Championship game will be a neutral site.
The Chiefs are currently sitting pretty with their first-round bye, and are waiting to see how the playoff picture plays out.
