CBB: Week in Review

There is nothing like daytime college hoops and a plate of Thanksgiving leftovers to get you in the holiday spirit. Feast Week certainly didn’t disappoint, providing fans with big-time, neutral-court matchups all around the country. Gonzaga was impressive in Maui, Kansas outlasted Tennessee in Brooklyn and Villanova took down Florida State in Orlando. Let’s take a look at what else took place around the country this week:

Week In Review – November 19-25

Team of the Week: Gonzaga Bulldogs

The Zags looked like one of the top three teams in the country this week, beating the likes of Illinois, Arizona, and of course, Duke in the Maui title game. They are still without their top player in Killian Tillie, which makes them look even more impressive. A big part of the team’s success should be credited to the play of forward Rui Hachimura and guard Zach Norvell Jr.

Mark Few’s team will look to add to its resume as they still play road games at Creighton and North Carolina and play Tennessee in Arizona. The 2009 season was the Zags’ only other Maui Invitational title.

Player of the Week: Myles Powell – Seton Hall

After two consecutive losses, the Pirates needed to have a big week at the Wooden Legacy. They got that thanks to the play of guard Myles Powell. The junior put up 40 points in their first game against Grand Canyon. He then put up 19 against Hawaii and 17 against Miami in the title game.

Three consecutive days putting up those kinds of numbers definitely makes Powell player of the week. After claiming the Wooden Legacy Championship, the Pirates host Louisville and play Kentucky in New York before conference play begins.

Upset of the Week: Lipscomb over #18 TCU

The Bisons of Lipscomb stunned 18th ranked TCU on Tuesday behind Garrison Mathews’ 23 points. It was the program’s first win ever against a Top 25 team. This comes just days after Lipscomb went into SMU and beat the Mustangs in Dallas.

ACC foes Clemson and Louisville have the Bisons’ full attention as they have non-conference matchups in December. Lipscomb looks like a team who will make the tournament and give a top seed a close game in March.

Game of the Week: Tennessee vs Kansas

In what could have been a preview of a Final Four matchup, Kansas took down Tennessee in OT in a very entertaining game.  The game was about as evenly matched as possible, other than Kansas’ 34 free throw attempts compared to the Vol’s 17. In an up and down, fast-paced affair, athleticism was all over the floor in Brooklyn. The Jayhawks were led by Dedric Lawson’s 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Tennessee was paced by Schofield’s 21 points.

Both teams look like legit contenders to get to Minneapolis and cut down the nets.
