After finishing last season with a 3-14 record making the playoffs should be the last thing on Bears fans’ minds. However, some fans believe the Bears can make the playoffs in 2023. Why do fans believe the Bears can make a turnaround of this magnitude?
A blueprint exists to go from the worst in the NFL to a playoff team. The latest team to pull it off was the Jacksonville Jaguars. Who made the playoffs last season after being the worst team in the NFL in 2022. Their turnaround was because they added weapons for quarterback Trevor Lawerence.
These new weapons allowed Lawerence to flourish, throwing for 25 touchdowns to only eight interceptions. Significantly improving his numbers from the year prior.
Bears fans see the leap the Jaguars made last season and think the Bears are next in line. Seeing as the Bears made many key additions this offseason. All that is left now is for Justin Fields to take steps similar to Lawerence.
The Bears made key acquisitions at almost every major position on offense this offseason besides quarterback. Acquiring star wide receiver D.J. Moore via trade headlined the Bears’ offseason. Another notable move the Bears made was signing former Tennesse Titans offensive guard Nate Davis.
Davis showed his reliability in run and pass blocking as a Titan. He consistently opened running lanes for running back Derrick Henry. Davis also only allowed 14 total quarterback pressures and only three sacks last season. Davis’s presence should allow Fields to be more comfortable in the pocket. The more comfortable Fields is in the pocket, the more he will throw the ball.
Moore was the Bears’ most important addition this offseason. Moore’s addition gives the Bears a true number one receiver Fields that can lean on. Moore has proven to be a reliable pass catcher with his 1,000-yard seasons. His reliability should help Fields develop, taking this offense to new heights.
The Bears also added running backs D’onta Foreman and Roschon Johnson. These additions help the Bears stay a great running team. They also drafted offensive lineman Darnell Wright who is athletic and can help in both the run and pass game.
All these additions should help spark the Bears’ offense and make them a playoff team.
After possessing the weakest record in 2022, the Bears have the sixth-easiest schedule in 2023. This means that the Bears will be able to compete in most of their games. In close games, the Bears’ offensive improvements should help them edge out some victories.
Another advantage the Bears have is the fact they are in the NFC, which is the weaker conference. Last season three teams made the playoffs with less the 10 wins. One was a division winner the other were wild card teams. This benefits the Bears because it means they only need to achieve nine wins. That win total is definitely attainable for the Bears this season. The Bears certainly have a lot in their favor, but will it help them make the playoffs in 2023?
