Byron Murphy 2024 NFL Draft Profile

Publish Date: April 22, 2024

The 2024 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Byron Murphy 2024 NFL Draft Profile.

Byron Murphy Background

Position: Interior Defensive Lineman

School: Texas

Size: 6-foot-1, 308 pounds

Class: Junior

2023 stats: 29 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 5 sacks

Murphy had a great season that saw both personal and team success at Texas. He is now in the 2024 NFL Draft.

As a four-star recruit in the class of 2021, Murphy decided to stay in the state of Texas to play for the Longhorns. He played in 12 games, starting one of them as a freshman. Murphy finished the season with 15 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. He continued as a rotational lineman in 2022, registering 26 total tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack. Murphy stepped into the starting lineup in 2023, totaling 29 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. His play helped Texas get to the College Football Playoff.

Following the College Football Playoff, Murphy declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is projected to be a first or second-round pick.

Byron Murphy Strengths

Murphy is an elite athlete for an interior defensive lineman. He is quick at the snap of the ball and then converts that quickness into long-term speed and power. With his quickness and speed, Murphy also has solid flexibility. His movement abilities are not something that are seen often for a player of his size.

He provides much more pass rushing from an interior lineman than most. His athleticism can help him win by attacking gaps. Murphy also has a good pass-rush plan going into most snaps. He has good pass-rush moves as well. He has shown a swim move, chop, club and rip.

His energy and motor really pop on tape. Murphy continues working toward the quarterback even after his initial rush is stopped. He shows good pursuit against the run and can make plays far from where he starts the play. Murphy brings it on most plays.

Byron Murphy Weaknesses

Murphy doesn’t have elite measurables. He stands 6-foot-1 and 308 pounds. This can cause him to be pushed around a little bit. With his size, he also doesn’t have great length, which makes it harder for him to disengage from blocks and make plays.

He isn’t the best at taking on double teams. Murphy can beat most men one on one, but double teams can swarm him. He needs to be utilized well, as he is at his best when he can attack one gap rather than take on multiple blockers.

Overall, Murphy is a good run defender, but he can sometimes struggle to shed. Struggling to shed against run blocks takes him out of the equation on plays and doesn’t allow him to show his pursuit skills. He can continue to add strength and show good gap integrity to be a better contributor against the run.
