The New York Liberty defeated the Atlanta Dream on Thursday night in Gateway Center. They advance to 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in Commissioner’s Cup play. The Dream fall to 4-4 and 0-2 in the Commissioner’s Cup.
Breanna Stewart led the way with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Jonquel Jones continues her dominance around the rim with a game high 3 blocks on the night. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton had 15 points and Jones and Sabrina Ionescu both contributed 10 points.
Courtney Vandersloot did not play due to personal reasons. It is unknown if the point guard will be back for their next game.
For the Dream, Allisha Gray led the way with 16 points, and Aerial Powers had 13 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Rhyne Howard added 11 points and Tina Charles had a team high 8 rebounds.
Despite their record, the Dream kept it within ten for a large portion of the game. However, the Liberty overpowered them, shooting better in all three categories, field goals, three-pointers and free throws. They made six more threes, snagged ten more rebounds and dished out nine more assists. In all but two of the Dream’s games they have either won or lost the rebounding battle which corresponded to the result of the game.
The Liberty return to action at top seeded Connecticut Sun on Saturday, June 8 at 1pm.
