Per a public job posting to LinkedIn on Wednesday, the newest iteration of professional women’s hockey in North America is in search of general managers for each of its six inaugural teams.
When the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association acquired the Premier Hockey Federation in June, it was announced that a new league would be launching in January of next year. The job post referred to the league as the Professional Women’s Hockey League, though it is not clear if this is a placeholder or will be the name used.
The GM search was posted by Bloom Sports partners, a sports advisory firm that has previously worked with the Orlando Pride and Angel City FC of the NWSL. Bloom’s website states that the firm provides organizational assessment and aids in executive search efforts.
The job posting states that the firm and league are working specifically alongside Jayna Hefford. After retiring from her professional playing career – with no less than 12 IIHF World Championships medals and five Olympic medals – player members of the PWHPA asked Hefford to be the Association’s Operations Consultant.
Potential Concerns
The existence of this GM job posting itself does elicit some potential concerns. Despite being posted on Wednesday, the post states that the application deadline is Friday, August 4, giving interested parties just over a week to enquire.
More egregiously, very few concrete details about the positions are listed. While the job description for a team general manager is specifically spelled out, neither the names nor even the locations of the future teams are provided. Applicants would ideally be in the know about what city their potential future job is operating in.
A salary range is also not listed, beyond the vague, “competitive base salary.”
These lapses in transparency may be intentional, though. In combination with the preference that candidates have “7+ years of experience working within elite sports and with elite athletes” and a “Deep knowledge of women’s professional hockey landscape, in North America and globally” they seem to indicate that Bloom and the League will be primarily considering applicants with prior experience in the PHF or PWHPA.
With the posting being public, though, these details should be addressed if Bloom plans to consider outside applicants.
