1. Ohio State’s Offensive Line Issues Look Better
Ohio State had one loss going into the game against Penn State this weekend, so a lot was on the line. The last few weeks they have had injuries to their offensive line. Ohio State was struggling up front as a result. It appeared that they may be vulnerable this week, especially because Penn State has a talented defensive line.
That didn’t end up being the case. All-American guard Donovan Jackson kicked out to left tackle and held up well. The Buckeyes were able to control the line of scrimmage and help the team rush for 176 yards. With a seven-point lead, Ohio State was able to run out the last 5:13 of the game on a drive that started on their own one-yard line. With the way the team played in the trenches today, Ohio State should be thinking about a possible national championship gain.
2. James Franklin Stil Struggles in the Big Games
James Franklin is notorious as a head coach for winning the games he should win, but struggling in his big matchups. That continued in week 10. Penn State had a 10-0 lead on Ohio State, but blew the lead and lost by seven points. It was a game where their defense kept them in it, but their offense couldn’t get in the end zone. That lack of efficiency cost James Franklin the game.
The loss puts Franklin at 1-10 against Ohio State in his Penn State career. There is some good news for Penn State fans, as previously losses to Michigan and/or Ohio State kept them out of a four-team playoff, the new 12-team format still allows them to make it. Whether they’ll be able to win a big game if they do make the CFP will be questionable.
3. The Big 12 Race is Still Wide Open
The Big 12 was seen as one of the more intriguing conferences coming into the season. That has held true for a few reasons. A lot of the early-season favorites have lost and are now out of the race. There are still plenty of teams in the race after the results Saturday.
Undefeated Iowa State dropped a close one to Texas Tech. Kansas State now has two Big 12 losses after losing to Houston. BYU was off this week and remains undefeated. Iowa State’s loss pits them in second place with Colorado, who was off this week. If either of them slip up the rest of the way, there are
4. There May Be One Team in the CFP From the ACC and Big 12
The CFP expansion to 12 teams opened the door for more teams to compete. A lot of those teams may end up being from the same two conferences, the SEC and Big Ten. There is still a lot that can happen, but things are trending toward each of those conferences getting four teams each in the CFP.
With the Big 12 suffering some tough losses, BYU and Iowa State sit as the two teams within range right now to make the CFP. In the ACC, Clemson lost to Louisville to get their second loss of the season. SMU defeated Pitt, giving both teams one loss on the season. Unless Miami is upset in the ACC Championship, it is looking more and more like the SEC and ACC will take up the majority of the spots in the CFP.
5. November Chaos has Started
It seems like every season November changes everything. Just when fans think they have it figured out, upsets happen and mix up the landscape of college football. It has already started this week. Several CFP contenders dropped games this week, including: Penn State, Texas A&M, Clemson, Iowa State, Kansas State and Pittsburgh.
There is a week or two without a ton of marquee games, but that is exactly when the upsets happen. Next week, Ole Mis plays Georgia in a big game. That is followed up that night with LSU going up against Alabama. Those are the games to watch out for, but the upsets that no one sees coming will also help shape the end of the season.
