In this UCL League Quarter-Finals Rundown, you will find snapshots of the semi’s most important moments.
In the 74th of minute of the second leg between Borussia Dortmund and Atlético de Madrid, Dortmund midfielder Marcel Sabitzer completed his team’s comeback. Sabitzer blasted a loose ball from the edge of past Madrid goalkeeper Yan Oblak, giving Dortmund a 5-4 lead on aggregate in the series. Dortmund nearly extended this advantage through striker Niclas Füllkrug, but Oblak won this one-on-one in the 81st minute.
Ousmane Dembélé scored in the 48th minute in the first leg of the series between PSG and Barcelona, celebrating with passion against his former club. A week later, in the 40th minute of the second leg, Dembélé slammed a low cross from Bradley Barcola into the back of the net, catalyzing PSG’s comeback in the series. This goal brought the aggregate score 4-3, still in Barça’s favor. He was not done yet, as his clever dribbling tempted Barça’s João Cancelo to take an ill-advised kick at him in the box. This resulted in a penalty for PSG, expertly dispatched by Kylian Mbappé.
In a tight contest between Bayern Munich and Arsenal, it was Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich who made all the difference. In the 63rd minute of the second leg, Fullback Raphaël Guerreiro, served an inch perfect cross to Kimmich, who then headed home to give Bayern a 3-2 lead in the series. Bayern won this match, and booked their 13th appearance in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Only Real Madrid have more semi-final appearances.
Admits a constellation of stars between Manchester City and Real Madrid, It was Andriy Lunin, Madrid’s goalkeeper, who shone the brightest. He began the season as the humble understudy to Thibaut Courtois, and now has established himself as a fantastic starter in Courtois absence due to injury. In the penalty shootout of the second leg, Lunin held his nerve, and save two penalties en route to a massive victory for Madrid. His first save came against, Bernardo Silva, one of City’s most capable midfielders. Lunin did not commit to dive, stayed calm, and easily save Silva’s penalty. Moments later, against Mateo Kovačić, he dove to his right, blocking Kovačić’s penalty first with his arm, then his leg. Thanks to Lunin’s efforts, Madrid would win the game 3-4 on penalties, following a 4-4 aggregate score.
