While Wayne Rooney thinks Manchester City will easily beat Real Madrid, Gary Neville doesn’t quite agree with his former teammate.
Manchester City will face defending champions Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals, with the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu tonight. Manchester City have been in incredible form in the second half of the season, with a potential treble on the cards for them.
They are currently top of the Premier League this season and face a FA Cup final with Manchester United. City is also blessed with players such as Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Ruben Dias, Jack Grealish, and co.
Meanwhile, Real has had a subpar season by their standards. They are just third in La Liga and lost their last two games in the competition. With 14 points behind league leaders Barcelona, they are set to lose the league. Wayne Rooney vs Gary Neville: Clashing opinions on Manchester City
Previously, former Manchester United and England player Wayne Rooney shared his opinion in The Times. He believes that City will not only beat Madrid but will ‘blow them away.
In there, he wrote, “Manchester City will not just beat Real Madrid in their Champions League semi-final – they’ll blow them away.”
“Of course, I may be wrong. There is no side better at disproving arguments against them than Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid in the Champions League. But I just think City are so good that they’re on another level.”
Gary Neville watched his former teammate’s statement and decided to share his own opinion. While he says the match at Bernabeu will not be easy for the Citizens, they could turn it around in the return leg at the Etihad. He wrote on Twitter, “Not sure I agree they will blow them away in Madrid but think they could at the Etihad. I think City will win over the two legs!”
While City may seem unstoppable this season, Real is a different club in the Champions League. The record UCL holders have mounted multiple comebacks in the competition many times. Having already knocked out Liverpool and Chelsea this season, they seem to beat English clubs with ease.
Another thing to remember is Real also completed an incredible comeback against City in last season’s semi-final as well. Whatever the result is, we are sure to be rewarded with another goal fest at the Bernabeu tonight.
