The 2026 FIFA World Cup is now over, bringing an end to a monstrous 104-game tournament. In this series, I’ll be taking a look at some of the best matches from the tournament. Let’s start with the game of the tournament.
Argentina vs. Egypt is considered to be the best match of the entire tournament, filled with drama, late goals and arguably the greatest comeback of the competition. The reigning champions, Argentina, were heavy favorites coming into this Round of 16 matchup but fell behind early after a goal from Yasser Ibrahim in the 15th minute.
To make matters worse for Argentina, Egypt scored a second goal in the 67th minute to go up 2-0 and put Argentina on the brink of elimination.
Fast forward to the 79th minute, and Argentina were just 10 minutes away from being eliminated. That’s when their legendary comeback began. They got their first goal from a Cristian Romero header before Lionel Messi tied the game 2-2 with an incredible strike in the 83rd minute.
To cap off the remarkable comeback, Enzo Fernandez scored in the 92nd minute to seal Argentina’s 3-2 victory. In the span of just 13 minutes, Argentina completely flipped the script and advanced to the quarterfinals in what was the match of the tournament.
This contest had thrilling goals, late-game drama, VAR controversy and an unforgettable comeback that will be remembered as one of the classic World Cup knockout matches of the 2020s.
