England vs. Mexico:

Arguably one of the greatest matches of this edition of the World Cup was the Round of 16 thriller between England and tournament hosts Mexico. The game had plenty of drama and was played in the incredible atmosphere of the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Mexico came into the match in outstanding form after dominating their group and not conceding a single goal.

Facing one of the world’s top international sides in England would be a true test and would also show whether England were capable of winning in one of the toughest playing environments in the world.

Mexico were the stronger team in the first half, but two goals from England’s Jude Bellingham in the span of two minutes completely changed the game. Mexico’s strong first-half performance was rewarded with a goal from Julian Quiñones in the 42nd minute to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into halftime.

The second half is where the game turned chaotic. There were three separate major VAR reviews, which resulted in a red card for England followed by penalties for both teams.

After Raul Jimenez’s goal in the 69th minute made it 3-2, Mexico spent the final 20 minutes plus an astonishing 11 minutes of stoppage time searching for an equalizer against a 10-man England side but were unable to find one.
