2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 Preview: Mexico vs. Ecuador

The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has concluded, and the matchups for the Round of 32 have been revealed and are now underway.

Mexico, the winners of Group A and one of only a few teams to win all three of their group-stage matches, will face Ecuador in the Round of 32 in Mexico City. This will be a highly anticipated matchup as one of the hosts of the tournament, Mexico, get to play a knockout-stage match in front of their home fans.

Mexico are entering this match in great form after defeating South Africa, South Korea and the Czech Republic to comfortably win their group with nine points. They are in a unique position, as they and Spain are the only two teams in this edition of the tournament yet to concede a goal.

El Tri have scored six goals in the group stage and saved their best performance for last in a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic. Mexico are led by experienced players such as Raúl Jiménez, Roberto Alvarado and Julián Quiñones, who leads the team with two goals.

Their opponents, Ecuador, had a much more difficult path to the knockout stage after qualifying as the third-placed team in Group E. They lost their World Cup opener 1-0 to Ivory Coast and drew their second match against Curaçao, meaning they had to defeat the eventual group winners, Germany, to qualify. They did exactly that, taking down the 2014 World Cup champions 2-1 thanks to a 77th-minute winner from Gonzalo Plata.

Ecuador are known for their solid defensive presence, conceding just two goals during the group stage. Their real challenge will be putting the ball in the back of the net, as they scored both of their tournament goals in their final group-stage match against Germany.

Ecuador will need their leader, Moisés Caicedo, to lead by example as they play in a hostile atmosphere that will certainly be behind the Mexican side.

The winner of this matchup will face the winner of the Round of 32 match between England and DR Congo.
