The group stages for the CRL Season 2 kicked off and the first round of matches has now been played. The two days managed to gather excitement, memorable moments and upsets. Teams looked to take their first steps for seeding into the single elimination playoffs.
Maryland A, second place in the Eastern Conference during season one, fell to their university’s B team in a tight affair. The favorites began the match falling 2-0 to Maryland B. Bouncing back, they equalized the match’s score at 2-2. Maryland B took the final round with a 3:2 result, giving them the match victory. Bragging rights belonged to the B team as both continue to work on their seeding.
In a shock reverse sweep, the University of Delaware defeated the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology in a 3:2 result. Initially dominating the game taking a quick 2-0 lead, the Leopards seemed to put the foot off the gas. Delaware took advantage and won the next three rounds scoring three goals in every round.
Two of the Southern Conference favorites faced on in match-day one. South Florida’s gameplan for the match worked wonders. Four of five rounds ended by one goal differences. Clinical gameplay by both teams, but in the end USF edged.
The most competitive conference kicked off with three banging games. Maryland B upsetting their university rival, free-scoring Penn State getting stopped by Worcester, and Delaware dropping heavy favorites Wentworth. Penn State striker “Doodle” helped make the match a high scoring affair but Worcester took every close round.
Last season’s CRL champions got off to a flying start, sweeping new boys Rensselaer and drubbing them 7-1 in round two. This began their conquest in the eastern conference to repeat their title.
The California Polytechnic State University Mustangs, who finished third during season one, began their season with a strong result. Their first match against the University of California – Santa Barbara ended in a swift 3-0. A 14:4 aggregate score demonstrated the clinical work by the favorites.
