If you’re playing the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen and wondering how to get Mewtwo, the good news is that Mewtwo is obtainable in normal gameplay — but only after you beat the main story. You cannot catch Mewtwo early. It is strictly a post-game Legendary in FireRed and LeafGreen.
Mewtwo is located in Cerulean Cave, which only unlocks after specific requirements are met.
To catch Mewtwo in Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen, you must:
Defeat the Elite Four and become Champion
Obtain the National Pokédex
Complete the Sevii Islands side quest
Help Celio restore the Network Machine
Once these steps are finished, the guard blocking Cerulean Cave in Cerulean City will move aside.

Cerulean Cave is a high-level dungeon filled with powerful wild Pokémon (often in the 50s and 60s). Bring plenty of Ultra Balls, healing items, and ideally a Pokémon with Sleep or Paralysis.
At the deepest level of Cerulean Cave, you’ll encounter Mewtwo at Level 70.
Save your game before initiating the battle. Mewtwo does not respawn if defeated, and there is only one available per save file.

With a base stat total of 680, Mewtwo is the strongest Pokémon in FireRed & LeafGreen, making it one of the most important post-game catches in the Nintendo Switch release.
