If you’re hunting Zapdos in Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen on Nintendo Switch, you don’t need to wait for the post-game or solve an environmental puzzle. Zapdos is available once you can use Surf, and it’s one of the most accessible Legendary Pokémon in Kanto.
That said, reaching it still requires a bit of navigation.
Zapdos is found inside the Kanto Power Plant, an optional dungeon located east of Cerulean City in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
To reach it:
Travel to Cerulean City.
Move toward Route 9.
Use HM03 Surf to follow the river south toward the Power Plant entrance.
Enter the abandoned facility and make your way through wild Electric-type encounters and item-filled corridors.
Unlike Seafoam Islands, there are no strength puzzles or current mechanics here. It’s a straightforward dungeon crawl with higher-level Pokémon like Magnemite and Electrode along the way.
At the end of the Power Plant, you’ll find Zapdos at Level 50.

Because Zapdos has strong Electric-type attacks and solid Speed, it can be dangerous if you’re underleveled. Save before the battle, bring status moves like Sleep or Paralysis, and stock up on Ultra Balls.
Zapdos does not respawn if defeated. In the Nintendo Switch version of FireRed & LeafGreen, you get one opportunity per save file — so make it count.
For many players, Zapdos is the most practical Legendary Bird to add to a late-game Kanto team thanks to its typing and accessibility.
