How to Get Umbreon in Pokémon FireRed LeafGreen: Nintendo Switch

If you’re playing the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen and trying to get Umbreon, there’s an important limitation you need to know right away: Umbreon cannot be evolved in FireRed or LeafGreen alone.

Even if you have an Eevee, you cannot evolve it into Umbreon through normal in-game mechanics in Kanto.

Can You Evolve Eevee into Umbreon in FireRed & LeafGreen?

In Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen, the in-game clock system required for Espeon and Umbreon evolutions does not exist. Umbreon normally evolves when Eevee levels up with high friendship during the night — but since FireRed & LeafGreen have no real-time day/night cycle, this method is unavailable.

So how do you get Umbreon?

You have two legitimate options:

1. Trade from Pokémon Colosseum or Pokémon XD You can obtain Umbreon in Pokémon Colosseum (where it’s a starter) and trade it into FireRed or LeafGreen.

2. Trade from Another Compatible Game If you evolve Eevee into Umbreon in a Generation III game that supports time-based evolution, you can trade it into FireRed & LeafGreen.

There is no Moon Stone, item, or alternate evolution trigger for Umbreon in these versions.

If you’re building a team in Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen on Nintendo Switch and want Umbreon, trading is required. FireRed and LeafGreen simply do not support friendship-based day/night evolutions on their own.
